Raul Nogueira, MD, Director of the UPMC Stroke Institute & Professor at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurology, and Mohamed F Doheim, MD, clinical research fellow within the UPMC Stroke Institute, are part of a recently published study titled "Higher Procedural Volumes are Associated with Faster Treatment Time, Better Functional Outcomes, and Lower Mortality in Patients Undergoing Endovascular Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke". Dr. Nogueira serves as first author on the study, which was published in the Annals of Neurology, the official journal of the American Neurological Association. Investigators aimed to characterize the association of hospital procedural volumes with outcomes among acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients undergoing endovascular therapy (EVT). The study, which involved a cohort of over sixty thousand AIS patients treated with EVT within twenty-four hours at 626 hospitals showed that higher procedural volumes were associated with better workflow and clinical outcomes. Why do some patients respond better to immunotherapy than others? A team led by scientists here at BWH has published a paper revealing new details about the tumor characteristics that facilitate a strong clinical response to these drugs. “What we’ve shown here is that patients are not necessarily doomed to not respond if they have low levels of TCF1. Additionally, for those patients who do have low levels, there are ways that we can boost their response,” says Ana C. Anderson, PhD, from the department of neurology. Neuroinflammation typically precedes neurodegeneration and clinical symptoms of dementia in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). As an extension of the brain, the retina of the human eye provides a potential non-invasive window for early diagnosis of AD. In our new paper, we quantified presumed neuroinflammation in the retina of preclinical AD patients using a low-cost and non-invasive technique compared to standard neurodiagnostic methods. There are currently more than 55 million people worldwide living with dementia (decline in mental ability which interferes with daily life). Alzheimer’s is a specific brain disease that causes 60-80% of dementia cases. https://lnkd.in/gKEhqC7S Radiology plays an important role in the treatment path! “Before starting amyloid-reducing therapy, Alzheimer’s patients could get a positron emission tomography (PET) scan to confirm the presence of the pathology. After this initial diagnosis, they would then require at least four MR scans in their first six months of treatment, consisting of one baseline scan and a minimum of three monitoring scans.
