Today marks 59A’s 5th birthday. What a half decade that’s been. Many thank you’s to lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of people. There’s loads of thank you’s to go around. It takes a village as they say. This was my end of year wrap up speech to kick of our Xmas party, it’s called Taming of the system. I want to share here to celebrate those last 5 years and also the incredible excitement for the next 5. Taming of the system. Standing at the first water powered mill made in 1771. It’s autumn. It’s fresh. It’s cold. It’s wet. It’s a clear day. The smell of the trees. Apart from the river, it’s entirety silent. You hear the power of the river many minutes before you feel it’s might. Next to a canal that funnels tons of water per blink of an eye stands the remains of a machine that tamed that power and revolutionised an industry. The artwork on the walls inside 59A are inspired by tales of machinery created to turn systems of power, chaos and complexity into something of revolution. Water tamed into mechanical power. Steal into Industry. Steam into Motion. Thought into reality. Today it is not water, steam nor steal being tamed. It is the incredible accumulation of the raw power of humanity’s collective knowledge. This is our river. The beauty and elegance to transform this river into whatever we can imagine is our taming of the system. That is our machine. Thought into reality. That is our way. 59A .
