Yesterday was a historic moment. For the first time, global political and industrial leaders came together for the world’s first Nuclear Energy Summit. Government leaders from 32 countries committed to ‘fully unlock’ the potential of nuclear energy in a world-first Nuclear Energy Declaration, building on the landmark pledge to triple nuclear by 2050 made at COP28. However, a Declaration is just that and sustained action is needed – it’s time to address the “how”. Big questions around nuclear finance and energy security, among others, remain and we must continue to creatively find solutions to tackle these. There’s clear room for the US nuclear industry to lead both at home and internationally. After yesterday’s discussions, we have a better sense of the momentum needed to stay on course. It was a huge pleasure to support the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at yesterday’s Summit and I hope that it is the first of many.

“By striving to fulfil Pillar III obligations, NWS would strengthen not only the NPT but also the declining confidence of NNWS in the regime.” In a recent publication with European Leadership Network (ELN), I write about how Pillar III of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) - the peaceful uses of nuclear energy pillar - could be unleashed to expedite Africa's journey towards sustainable development. Sustainable development is the cornerstone for a flourishing and prosperous Africa that current and future generations deserve. Since nuclear energy possesses the potential to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, accelerate clean energy transition, and power industrial productivity through stable electricity supply across Africa, it is vital that Africa receives the necessary assistance to fully leverage the benefits of nuclear energy. One avenue through which Africa can access this support is via the NPT. My article highlights the NPT's shortfalls and explores how nuclear-weapons states can assist Africa in maximizing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. Notably, if nuclear-weapons states fulfill their obligations under Pillar III to African states, it would create a mutually beneficial outcome for both parties. This action would not only reinforce Africa’s commitment to the NPT, but also expedite Africa's journey towards sustainable development. In the concluding section of my analysis, I also propose that The World Bank amends its nuclear energy policy and begins to provide financing for nuclear energy projects. There are two primary factors standing in the way of the US becoming a leader in nuclear power: 1. A declining construction industry that doesn't have the capabilities to build nuclear on time and on budget. 2. A regulatory authority that has not updated its policies for the changing industry and lacks enough manpower to keep up with expected pace. The GAO released a report last month highlighting the second of these points: "NRC will likely experience staffing challenges that can lead to lengthy review schedules and inefficiencies in NRC’s advanced reactor reviews." Without a capable regulator, the nuclear industry in the US will fail.

Our current definition of success in new nuclear technology seems modest. To revitalize the nuclear sector, we need a significant boost in support and strategic investment. A comprehensive nuclear expansion initiative should be a top national priority, similar to defense programs. Without a clear and steadfast vision backed by unwavering commitment, the industry is unlikely to achieve transformative changes and significant progress it urgently needs. #nuclearindustry #energysector #nationalpriority

This data highlights the significance of the NPT second preparatory committee meeting ahead of the 2026 NPT Review Conference which will held from July 22-Aug 2 in Geneva to review implementation of the landmark 1968 treaty and seek to develop a forward-looking action plan on its key components of nonproliferation, disarmament, and peaceful use of nuclear energy.
