21 Ways In 21 Day #17 Our National Day is Love the Land Day. What if we reframed Australia’s National Day to “Love the Land Day”? The tag line could be, throw off your shoes and throw off your fears, get connected with the Land we all Love. On ‘Love the Land Day’ people are encouraged to walk on the land with their bare feet and learn to love it more. In a genuine way, people are encouraged to deepen their relationship to nature and to share in connection activities with their neighbours. ‘Love the Land Day’ is not just about nature. It is also about place. Where we live matters. On ‘Love the Land Day’ people are encouraged to find out more about the place where they live. What’s the history, how has it changed over time, and what’s the next phase for your place? If Australia’s National Day was ‘Love the Land Day’ it could help draw us closer through a common love of land and common fate. If we don’t love it, who will? If we don’t care and nourish the lands and waters, it will negatively impact the quality of life for all of us. ‘Love the Land Day’ takes us into the spiritual and personal with our individual connection to land, as well as the national arena of caring for country. Most importantly, ‘Love the Land Day’ will bring us closer together, feeling more belonging and pride in our places and neighbourhoods. Be encouraged and encourage others. Calling all B Corps to gather and reconnect at our first AANZ B Corp gathering in 5 years! In a few weeks on 26-28 February, B Lab AANZ will be hosting Assembly, a 3-day community event at Cape Schank, Victoria, Australia. This is the first and largest one of its kind since 2017. Given the growth of the movement (the B Corp community tripled in size since 2017), Assembly is the place for new B Corps to connect with each other and an opportunity for early adopter B Corps to refuel their passion and lead collective action. Most importantly, Assembly brings everyone together to catalyse and accelerate change, during a time when a shared voice for hope is needed more so than ever. We will be having conversations about: the role of business in society, how our financial system needs to change, a debate on excluding or leading bad actors, what stakeholder governance means for SMEs, the leadership needed for our times… etc. Last but not least, B Lab Global’s interim lead executive Clay Brown will be hosting a session on the evolving B Corp Standards. All this will be delivered against a stunning setting in the beautiful Mornington Peninsula (90 minutes outside of Melbourne) in between beach walks and rock pool swims. Assembly is simply not to be missed! It will be a memorable experience designed for connection and impacting change. It is an opportunity to transform intentions into tangible actions, and challenge ourselves as leaders, as changemakers, and as people, to find solutions. All this starts with reconnection — with each other, ourselves, nature, and our work. We would like to see as many B Corps represented at Assembly, so show your support for the movement and have your voice heard. If your B Corp have not booked your ticket already – good news is that on-site accommodation options are still available. We hope to see you! www.assembly2024.com #bcorporation #bcorp #gathering

Earlier today, I wrote a piece on my personal page with some personal reflections on the appropriateness or otherwise of 26th January, as Australia's "national day". I've long held the view - many years before I became aware of the feelings of Australia's First Peoples about the appropriateness of the date - that using the anniversary of the foundation of Sydney (which, claims that it actually represents the anniversary of the creation of Australian citizenship in 1948 notwithstanding, is what the vast majority of Australians think that the 26th January commemorates) as a celebration of Australia as a nation is a bad choice. It reinforces what I've long felt is an excessively Sydney-centric interpretation of Australia's post-1778 history and culture. Most nations who have 'national days' - and especially those nations who were once colonies of other nations - have as their national days, a day which their citizens identify as symbolizing them ceasing to be a colony, rather than of becoming one, as the 26th January does. To the many people who I know will disagree with me about this, I want to say, I love this country as much as you do, and I'm no less proud of being an Australian than you are. But I don't need to commemorate the founding of Sydney to prove it: and I don't see why I should be expected to. The article is also now on my website, here: https://lnkd.in/gHwtpkN5 - along with a map of 'Australia' that omits NSW, Queensland and Victoria, rather than Tasmania (as all too many maps purporting to be of 'Australia' still do). It was of course drawn up by Abel Tasman, the first European to "discover" Tasmania (or Van Diemen's Land, as he called it), as well as New Zealand - 128 years before Captain James Cook, aided by Tasman's maps, "discovered" the site of present-day Sydney Airport, an event which the Sydney-centric view of Australian history still regards as the [European] "discovery" of Australia. Thankyou Ratih Luhur for finding and posting this map.

Adam Morris and I are super excited to get to the B Corp Assembly next week. This year marks our first decade as a B Corp. It's played a really important role in us finding our feet and making our dent. If you're a B Corp, make sure you get there next week. There is nothing better than getting a critical mass of folks, who give a shit, together for some sharing and celebrating and plotting. #bcorp #bcorps #socialimpact #socialenterprise #sustainablebusiness #impact #purposedrivenbusiness https://lnkd.in/gjzwZtrG
