Every year, we contact more than 3.5 million addresses across the country to participate in the #AmericanCommunitySurvey. Your responses generate #ACSdata that show how we live—our education, housing, jobs, and more. The ACS is the only source of local estimates for most of the 40-plus topics it covers. ▶️ https://lnkd.in/eCWRy934 #WeTheData

Elected Official & Visionary Leader | Keynote Speaker | CEO & Entrepreneur | Community Connector doing my part to help transform Waterloo Region
In October 2023 I put forward a motion during our budget process that specifically addressed funding future supports for youth in our region. This motion was based on conversations I had with youth and those working with youth, in particular the Children and Youth Planning Table of Waterloo Region. I don't share my motions on LinkedIn, however, I'm sharing this in an effort for us to remember that youth are the central part of a community and their well-being is critical to all of us. In the end, youth know we do value them and want to ensure they feel seen and are heard. Thanks Children and Youth Planning Table of Waterloo Region for the work you all do. Thank you to the youth who filled out this survey. Motion: Funding for Children and Youth Programs and Services Whereas Regional council has established a new 2023-27 strategic plan “Growing with Care” that prioritizes equitable services and opportunities for all, including for children and youth, by providing equitable, accessible, services across Waterloo Region that support the social determinants of health, safety and complete communities as we grow; and Whereas the Regional Municipality of Waterloo delivers a variety of programs and services including; Children’s Services; and Whereas according to the 2021 Canadian Census, 101, 370 children aged 0 to 14 were counted in the region. Representing approximately 17.3% of the total population. In comparison for Canada the proportion of children was 16.3% in 2023; and Whereas youth wellbeing and belonging are increasingly becoming a growing concern in our region; and Whereas 1 in 2 youths do not feel like a valued member of our community; and Whereas the well-being of youth has been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic; and Whereas only 64.1% report a strong sense of belonging to their community, and only 26.3% report positive mental health and these stats are 15, and 54 percentage points lower than pre-pandemic levels, respectively; and Whereas there is an increasing need to fill gaps that support youth in the community as their wellbeing and sense of belonging is an integral part of our community, and building upstream community safety; and Whereas the region does not currently have a sustainable ongoing program that is specifically targeted to meeting the specific future needs of Youth. Therefore, be it resolved that $150,000 in annual funding be added to the 2024 Regional budget to fund specific priority initiatives that meet the future needs of Youth as has been identified through Community Services, Public Health, the pan-regional collaborative of the adults and young people that come together in the Children and Youth Planning Table, the Smart Waterloo Region Innovation Lab collaborative and The Community Safety and Wellbeing plan. Passed unanimously December 2023. The marathon continues...
The 2023 Youth Impact Survey Data Briefs are out now! Access data and insights compiled from 1,867 young people living in #WaterlooRegion. Read the briefs here: https://lnkd.in/gVzuJe77 Data from YIS results helps us as a community to understand the state of well-being of young people living in Waterloo Region. I’m very concerned about South Africa’s overall decline in financial literacy. It has severe consequences for our people, and the decline is worse among women, older people and people who live in rural areas. I was glad to be able to share my concerns with the nation via SABC News yesterday, #WorkersDay. African Response is working to close this gap through partnering with organisations in the financial services sector to deliver consumer financial education targeting rural communities. #FinancialLiteracy https://lnkd.in/dGYMPtQW
