ChatGPT's assessments of UC, reported in a recent study, were largely consistent with those of expert gastroenterologists. - The study assessed ChatGPT's effectiveness in determining disease severity and the need for hospital admission in 20 distinct cases of acute UC. - Researchers provided ChatGPT with case summaries containing vital data such as symptoms, vital signs, and lab results. - The chatbot then assessed disease severity and recommended hospitalisation or outpatient care based on established criteria. - ChatGPT's assessments aligned with gastroenterologists' evaluations 80% of the time, demonstrating a high degree of reliability. However, there were minor discrepancies in four cases, primarily due to inaccurate cut-off values for certain systemic variables. ChatGPT tended to lean towards hospital admission more often than actual clinical practice. The study acknowledges limitations, including its small sample size, and suggests further validation across larger and more diverse clinical scenarios to verify ChatGPT's accuracy and effectiveness in a broader context. However, it is beyond doubt that AI technologies are being gradually implemented in healthcare practice and clinical trials. Do you have any measures in place to ensure your AI-enabled studies meet the regulatory Quality standards? Enabling early disease detection, implementing AI for administrative automation, and improving patient engagement were the top priority goals for Dr. N and his team for the first phase of AI integration project. A successful radiology pilot in the hospital paved the way for an expansion of the project's scope to include the most pressing need of the hospital – a chatbot as their AI-enabled administrative assistant. Read on to know more.... This is Part 6 of an ongoing interview series where I talk with Dr. N from ABC Hospital* (a mid-sized multi-specialty hospital) in Hyderabad, India. Dr. N spearheads an artificial intelligence project for the facility. Part 1 had a general overview of the stakeholders, and Part 2 shared more details of key stakeholders, such as the medical team and patients. In part 3, we discussed the role of regulatory agencies involved in AI projects for a hospital, Part 4 talked about the technical components involved in this project, and Part 5 outlined the pilot in the hospital. Any tool that can be utilized by healthcare personnel to optimize care delivery, not to replace them. Necessary technology for critical access facilities in rural markets. “"I think it's a clinical tool. Right now it's a research tool, it can help me with radiology, with cancer diagnosis. But in the doctor's office, especially if there's a scarcity of people for me to refer to specialists. Let's say I'm in a rural area and I can't get a diabetes doctor on speed dial or an oncologist on speed dial, this may help provide more information with decision-making. So, I look at it as positive, but doctors have to remain in control of it. It is not to replace us," he stressed.” https://lnkd.in/gd39MXU9

Thought-provoking article today in Nature Medicine from the RAISE Consortium that describes ongoing efforts to shape AI in healthcare (AIH) for the benefit of all patients: “At a moment when the complexity of modern medicine has surpassed the capacity of the human mind, only AIH will be able to perform many tasks. AIH thus seems to offer unparalleled potential for further medical progress, including for precision medicine — the right therapy, for the right patient, at the right time. Thus, it is in the interest of the public and the medical profession to hasten its adoption, so long as it is used safely and made maximally accessible for all.” https://lnkd.in/eVVh332w
