Don't forget to say thank you to your practice manager this week! Being a veterinary practice manager is not an easy job. You have to be willing to wear many hats and roll with anything. The nights you spend worrying about the next big thing is endless! As a manager you worry about your team, how to fix a problem, make someone happy, find time to get things done and those concerns never stop. It really takes someone special. At VGP we are lucky as we get to meet so many practice management teams across the United States and there is one key value that connects everyone - Dedication. The stories we hear from managers are usually the same, I was called to be in this position. Usually not asked for, just found. Navigating those waters of finding your management style and connecting with your team can be a journey. Practice Managers are some of the strongest and most resilient individuals you will ever meet. Their dedication for doing what's right in this field is seen in how they elevate their teams. It is always stated, the higher you get in an organization the lonelier it is at the top. It's true. It's easy to feel unappreciated when you are the only person to hear all the things that need to be fixed. That's why it's important to celebrate these amazing people who took on the challenge of managing their practices. Reminding them of the positive impact they have on their teams, community and industry. Thank you to all the practice managers who have dedicated their lives to serve others in veterinary medicine. Pro Tip: Remember, a Thank You doesn't have to be fancy or extravagant, sometimes words mean more than gifts. A little delayed but Happy New Year everyone! The last year or so I have worked on building. Building something with my friends. Building something for myself and my family. Building something to give back. Building something that will make an impact in my little corner of the veterinary world. 🌎 I’m so proud to say I now co-own 2 veterinary practices. Practices that will be used as a safe place within this industry. A place of growth and support no matter what position you are in within the practice. A place where all doctors, including foreign doctors, will find mentorship. A place to get people on their feet and sprout wings to fly. I spent the last year consulting with veterinary practices throughout Florida and the US. I put together a practice management series to provide support and easy to follow tips and resources that can be used in everyday practice. It was amazing and so much fun! I am grateful every single day I chose this path. I’m grateful for the people I meet and the life long relationships I have made. I’m blessed to have a husband that supports me and has also joined me on this journey! Thank you to every one who has believed in me and pushed me when I needed a push. The future is bright and I’m so excited to keep building and growing in 2024. I typically have a word of the year but this year will be a little different. This year it’s a few more words than one…… I want to keep growing myself within this industry. Associate veterinarians generally are paid in one way. Practice owners, on the other hand, typically have four income sources: 1. Like associate veterinarians, practice owners are paid for being veterinarians when they treat patients and serve clients. 2. Owners receive additional compensation for their leadership, administrative, and management involvement. 3. Ownership allows veterinarians to receive a return on the veterinary practice investment. 4. The fourth and final paycheck for the practice owner is the practice’s real estate (should be 8-10% of the real estate’s fair market value). Why do I care about the veterinary locum sector? I'm a locum myself, I get that, but, I could easily do my job and go home again. The locum sector is probably one of the most disliked areas of the veterinary industry. Many professionals within the industry harbour a sense of disdain toward the sector. I acknowledge that it is often viewed negatively, plagued by issues like incorrect placements, Isolation, unreliable locums, high perceived costs, and a lack of tangible returns. But I see through ALL of that and THAT is exactly why I care. The locum sector is vital for our industry and I WILL flip your perspective, your vet friend's perspective and your next door neighbour's perspective on locums. Why? Because the look on your face... joking. It is because I've lived the challenges, and I'm determined to be part of the solution. Side note/funny observation: people tend to hush up about not liking locums when they're out in the open. It's why I expect this post to be pretty quiet.
