Our Generosity in July campaign is an opportunity to support Unum Group community partners during a critical time of need. This year, we're supporting our community partners who help older adults (age 65+) stay active and independent. Throughout July, #TeamUnum will spread the #CaringSpirit and build stronger communities, one act of service at a time. Southern Maine Agency On Aging provides vital programs for older adults and caregivers in our region, including Meals on Wheels, Medicare counseling, and case management services for individuals of the greatest social and economic need.

The Sandwich Generation Are you a part of the Sandwich Generation? This might not be something you have ever heard of, so let’s see if this sounds familiar. You had a long, rough day at work, but the workday is finally over. You finally get to go home and relax. But unfortunately, that is far from what you know. When you go home, you need to make dinner for the kids, help them with their homework, wash the dishes, and pick up your daughter from work since she doesn’t drive yet. On top of this, you need to spend time with your aging mother who lives in your home that was recently diagnosed with dementia. She is slowly forgetting to care for herself properly and has been making attempts to exit your home. When everything is settled, you’re already way past your bedtime and you know it will add to the exhaustion life will bring you tomorrow. This is a common scenario when you are a part of the Sandwich Generation. The Sandwich Generation refers to middle-aged adults who care for both elderly parents and their own children. According to the Pew Research Center, nearly half of middle-aged adults have a parent 65 or older and are either raising a young child or financially supporting a grown child. About 1-in-7 middle-aged adults are providing financial support to both an aging parent and a child. This, I’m sure you’re already thinking it, can cause many challenges for the caregiver such as lack of emotional, financial, and social support to name a few. There are some non-profits and government assistance programs who offer help in situations like these. Aging Life Care Association, for example, works with families who care for older adults who are facing health challenges. They offer resources including financial, housing, family, advocacy, and legal assistance, among many other obstacles you may encounter. I have linked the website below that is packed with information regarding aging care assistance. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your local Area on Aging to request help with finding resources in your area. I wanted to share this article about the plight that many of us will face who have aging parents and who live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Those who don't have means to pay for quality in home care or to pay for quality assisted living communities are left feeling that they will be a burden on their families. I think we need to build family and community support systems that are accessible and that have very few barriers to entry. Thoughts?
