Following the UK Government's latest sanctions against individuals allegedly connected to human trafficking, including an Australian man, Jacob Sims' op-ed highlights the urgent need for the world to respond to the exploding nature of forced scamming. "I am hopeful that in coming months we'll see more criminals sanctioned and other countries following suit. But this can only be the beginning. This is now a global issue. If we truly aim to disrupt this criminal industry and deter its abuses, it will require a global response." Forced Scamming is a devastating crime that sees victims forced to conduct online scams under threats of abuse and torture. IJM has supported over 350 individuals identified as survivors of forced scamming. Read the op-ed: https://lnkd.in/gmwjxcez #forcedscamming #trafficking #crisis #sanctions #UK #Australia

Modern slavery is not a standalone issue. #modernslavery and #humantrafficking are a key part of infrastructure so serious organised crime can fulfil its goals. This includes Northern Ireland. While happens elsewhere in the UK what makes it distinct in Northern Ireland is what this report outlines "Police have said that the number of crime gangs that it is investigating fluctuates depending on "perceived threat, harm and risk", and that it is understood that 38% of OCGs have links to paramilitaries." It is often heard that these are crimes of profit. What is the profit for? 1. Criminals enjoying the profit for themselves e.g. #moneylaundering 2. It is used for further crimes to increase profit. e.g. #drugtrafficking 3. It is used for advancing ideology through terrorism e.g. purchase of weapons Spotting modern slavery makes communities safer and enables Police Service of Northern Ireland and other professionals to be strategic to be in a world free from slavery. Hope for Justice and Slave-Free Alliance training in Northern Ireland is led by Pete Kernoghan who has years of experience in this area. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (#UNODC) has released an in-depth study into the mounting issue of transnational organized crime (TOC), including #human #trafficking, #money #laundering and #cyber #crimes, that is growing across the region. “If accurate, these estimates of trafficking for forced criminality in #Southeast #Asia would suggest that this is one of the largest coordinated trafficking in persons operations in history, and occurring in the context of TOC,” the report cautioned. The September report involved research into media reports and available documents, as well as interviews with government officials, NGOs, stakeholders and #victims. It followed growing concerns about rising reports of forced criminality to commit #online #scams and #financial #fraud, particularly in Special Economic Zones and other areas mainly in #Cambodia, #Laos and #Myanmar.
