Kraal reinforcement is a practical way to mitigate human and wildlife conflict. In the video below is a demonstration of a raised kraal that was built after training the villagers. The adoption of these raised kraals will lead to the reduction of predation levels. #action4wildlife #HWC #mitigation

In 2023, the Space for Giants court monitoring team monitored activity on 71 wildlife crime cases in 18 court stations across the north and central regions. Of those, 26 were cases of interest as they involved significant wildlife trophies, government officials, factions of organized crime, or repeat offenders. The largest seizure recorded was 37 pieces of elephant tusks weighing over 236 pounds. The team noted a concerning increase in cases involving public service employees, personnel working in protected areas, and repeat offenders. We raised these concerns with the director of Public Prosecutions and will continue to monitor them closely. We also continued assisting the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Case Progression Unit in drafting charge sheets and witness statements to ensure that cases resulted in convictions and asset recovery. Kenya was the first country where we installed electric fences to tackle human-elephant conflict. We regularly update the government on their maintenance and effectiveness and advise on the gaps that must be closed. With our partner, Kenya Wildlife Service, we conduct more than 20 fence patrols every month, both routine and in response to incidents. The leakage of ivory back into the illegal market and the weak enforcement of wildlife protection laws perpetuate the illegal ivory trade and the continued slaughter of elephants. Over the past 10 years, the Elephant Protection Initiative has been working with its 24 member states and other conservation NGOs like Conservation International, Wild Africa Fund, African Parks Network, and many more to mitigate these risks and secure Africa's ivory. Despite what people may think increasing wildfires are not just happening on the West Coast. The midwest region deals with wildfires, especially after drought, and warmer winters and they can quickly get worse when combined with high winds that frequent our region. The lack of adequate support for firefighters and not using methods such as prescribed burning has left us in a serious situation. With wildfires increasing in amount and strength each year we have no time left to wait to support these communities. Without these essential positions wildlife conservation and the health of our communities are extremely threatened. Read More about this issue here: https://lnkd.in/gXwqVCdZ

Such an important message but quite difficult to implement. There is a huge bush meat value chain in the country. Implementing recommendations on keeping wild animals in the wild would involve effective implementation of wild life conservation measures in addition to ensuring those in the value chain have alternative sources of income, and having measures targeting social and behavior change #SBC Beyond taking wild animals for meat, there’s also a huge market for wild animal parts used as traditional medicines. We have a long way to go but it is achievable. #GlobalHealthSecurity #OneHealth #AnimalWelfare
Bush meat remains illegal in Nigeria, and this is because protecting wildlife, helps to keep humans safe. Hence, let’s spread the news to keep them wild and keep us safe. #protectwildlife #preventzoonosis #protectforest #onehealth
