Want to do qualitative research, but worried it is too time consuming? Register now for this free webinar on template analysis, a rapid qualitative method led by one of our fabulous MnOPT Post Docs, Dr. Patrick Brady!
We are excited to announce the first Bright Spots Mini-Lab event this school year is on October 12, 2023. Our guest speakers, Patrick Brady and Grace Ryan, will share their expertise on Template Analysis as a method for rapid qualitative inquiry. Template Analysis is a structured approach in which researchers identify major domains covered in a data collection and provide summaries of participant responses for each domain. They then place each summary in a matrix to identify recurring themes under each domain. In this workshop, attendees will build their understanding of: 1. Recognizing when rapid qualitative methods would be most appropriate 2. Describing the steps of template analysis as a rapid qualitative method 3. Proposing how to use template analysis in one’s own research program Register here: https://lnkd.in/gNGPbS-b University of Minnesota School of Public Health

As a global health practitioner (with graduation around the corner), I am excited to share that I successfully presented my capstone, the culminating project of my MPH program, to my colleagues at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. In collaboration with Primeros Pasos, a local NGO in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala that addresses child malnutrition within the Palajunoj Valley, my capstone is a multisite mixed-methods pilot study that is exploring dietary practices and food purchasing behaviors among fathers in the Western Highlands. By investigating barriers to paternal engagement in child malnutrition alleviation, my capstone aims to: 📝 Enhance programmatic interventions at Primeros Pasos 💡 Expand awareness of child malnutrition 🤝🏾 Increase paternal participation in health initiatives in rural Guatemala Delving into global health research and practice over the past two years has been enriching, challenging, and rewarding. With the support of the This Is Public Health Global Grant through the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH), my capstone truly encapsulates the knowledge and skills that I developed in community-engaged research, capacity building, program evaluation, and public health consulting. I am forever grateful for the support of my professors, mentors, and colleagues who have guided me along the way. As I continue to grow professionally, I am committed to advocating for indigenous-centered health practices and research, thus utilizing health equity as a vehicle for social justice. In late summer I was selected to participate in Designing and Managing Public Health Systems: 8 Steps to Success. The course met weekly for 8 weeks. During our sessions, we learned strategies for working with technical teams, how to communicate program informatics needs, and much more. Key takeaways: - Good information leads to good decisions, which leads to better interventions and better health outcomes. - Communicate often and clearly. - Bring partners to the table early.

This year-end, I had an opportunity to take a course on Public Health Analytics offered by UTHealth Houston (The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston). This course had good modules on using analytical approaches to manage and visualize public health datasets. It was also a good refresher on the utility of various tools for measuring impact through analytics. #continouslearning #learningeveryday #learninganddevelopment

In our October #AENnewsletter, we highlight the Areas of Research Interest database, which came as a result of the 2015 Nurse review to bridge the gap between research and government policy. Collaborating with Annette Boaz, the author of this newsletter feature created a searchable ARI database, fostering communication among researchers, funders, and policy-makers. This tool aligns research projects with government priorities, enhancing evidence synthesis, collaboration, and transparency. While not a comprehensive solution, it offers opportunities for more effective interactions and informed policy decisions. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dNayh8D2.
