Health insurers are stepping up to address the housing affordability crisis by investing hundreds of millions of dollars into building new affordable housing units. Why it matters? Housing instability isn't just a roof-over-head issue; it directly impacts health outcomes. By tackling this, insurers are addressing Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) head-on, leading to healthier communities and potentially less costly enrollees in the long run. Do the best-laid care plans seem to fall apart when a patient leaves the office? Often, the success of a care plan depends on factors largely outside the patient’s control. These social determinants of health (SDOH) include how easily the patient can access and pay for care, as well as the patient’s socioeconomic status, education, physical environment, working conditions and social support. VHAN can help practices understand the role SDOH play in patients’ health. As the insurance industry incorporates SDOH into their payer models, look to VHAN for guidance on new approaches to care. Community health centers are doing all they can to support communities in need. However, these data points are troubling and a shift in healthcare systems needs to occur. More support for community health centers is greatly needed as they fill in the gaps. Paying for health care is increasingly straining US adults as escalating medical costs converge with rising prices throughout the economy. More than half of working-age Americans said they had difficulty paying for health care in 2023, according to a Commonwealth Fund survey published Thursday. Among people without insurance, more than three-quarters reported trouble affording care. But 43% of people with employer health plans said they had difficulty paying, and the rate was even higher among people on public health plans like Medicare and Medicaid. #publichealth #healthcare #insurance https://lnkd.in/eG5m-p-V

Healthcare costs in the United States have generally grown faster than inflation. The U.S. far exceeds other large and wealthy nations in per capita health spending, and health care represents a much larger share of the economy in the U.S. than in peer nations. Elevated health care expenditure in the U.S., however, does not consistently translate into superior health outcomes. Rising health care costs contribute to many people facing difficulties affording medical care and drugs, even among those with insurance. Despite substantial spending, the U.S. health system grapples with disparities and gaps in coverage. Given these challenges, what steps do you think could be taken to better align health care spending with improved health outcomes and greater affordability for all? https://lnkd.in/en6kq8zA #RTConsulting #healthcare #healthcarecosts #medical #inflation #economy #challenges #affordability #outcomes #coverage #drugcosts #drugs

Physician-in-Chief, Dartmouth Health Children's | Collaborative, inclusive, and resilient healthcare leader
I might modify this headline to: Not Everything is Healthcare, But Just About Everything Contributes to Health As Chris Pope from The Manhattan Institute writes, "Affordable quality housing is important, but it isn’t healthcare. The problem of how to increase the supply of housing in dense urban areas is unlikely to be solved by making it health insurers’ responsibility. Giving medical providers the task of solving intractable social problems burdens them with extraneous responsibilities for which they are poorly suited." But I take exception with his assertion that "Social policies shouldn’t be pursued for the sake of their incidental effects on health." Most good public policy ultimately improves some dimension of health. Instead of passing these important investments through the bloated bureaucracies of health insurance middlemen, we could achieve massive administrative savings through #ImprovedMedicareforAll, then reinvest those resources in the essential drivers (usually called social determinants) of health.

Ever wonder the differences between Fully insured and Level funded group health plan options? Fully insured group plans require fixed premiums paid to insurers who absorb all financial risk. In contrast, level funded plans entail lower fixed premiums to TPAs, with employers assuming some risk. While fully insured plans offer stability but limited customization, level funded plans provide flexibility, potential savings, and greater control over plan design. Fully insured plans adhere to state regulations, whereas level funded plans offer exemptions and more autonomy in benefit offerings.

According to a recent report from Moody's Investors Service, despite some challenges, the financial outlook for health plans remains stable as the year concludes. The report highlights strong third-quarter earnings for publicly traded health insurers, with notable improvements from better individual market performance, higher commercial enrollment, and positive 2024-star ratings. The overall 2023 outlook for health insurers remains stable, showcasing resilience amid factors like Medicaid redeterminations and concerns about a possible recession. #healthcare #healthplans #insurers
