Pro-Marxist classes (such as English 308 MARXISM AND LITERARY THEORY) are taught by self-proclaimed Marxists (such as Alys Eve Weinbaum) are a major part of UW. “Marxists at UW” is a registered student organization. Marxist signs frequently appear around the campus. Marxism is a cult of hate espousing “class warfare” and “dictatorship of the proletariat”. It is responsible for 200 million deaths in the 20th century! It has been discredited by total economic failure (in Marxist Cuba today the average MONTHLY salary of a worker is $30-40 dollars U.S.!). UW should not hire Marxists to teach Marxism for the same reasons they should not hire Nazis to teach Nazism. Hate should have no home at UW! 😖

I get it. Higher education needs to reform. I've been saying that for years. But to me it's not what you teach, rather how you teach. More accurately, how the system wants you to teach. Instead consider.... How you deliver programs. How you measure competency. How you model the curriculum. How you integrate a 400 year old system into a modern, complex society. How you deliver the product at scale. How you make it affordable and desirable. How you signal achievement. How you make it agile and adaptable to the workforce. How you make it less time consuming. How you leverage technology. How you measure outcomes. You can still offer Humanities programs, but do it better. Do everything better...

So exciting to support a new cohort of Scholars in Service @ Stanford Impact Labs! I can't think of a faster way for faculty to learn how to make research more impactful than by spending time away from the University in the "real world." As one of our former Scholars in Service said: "In academia, we talk about policy as a few concrete choices to choose from ... what a policy really means is hundreds of thousands of decisions and actions, from formulation to implementation, each of which involves communicating with tons of people."

In 2023, only 48% of California’s high school graduates met the criteria for admission into the state’s two public university systems, with traditionally underserved students seeing even higher levels of ineligibility, according to a recent EdSource report. EOS Superintendent-in-Residence Ryan Smith, an education leader in California for twenty years, has witnessed this issue first-hand – but sees a clear path to a brighter future for the state’s high school students. In his new article, Smith breaks down his solution to this persistent problem into a few key focus areas: Raising expectations and changing mindsets, eliminating barriers and increasing support for students, and engaging and empowering parents. Smith highlights EOS as one of the organizations helping schools cultivate inclusive and encouraging classroom environments, which allows students to reach new academic heights and equips them with the tools to thrive at the next level. Higher ed must do more than hold hours-long Juneteenth symposiums to support its Black communities and ensure diversity campus- and systemwide. Leaders must launch outreach efforts, form effective teams to develop comprehensive action plans, and facilitate cultural changes systemwide. But where can you start? The California State University (CSU) system has been implementing change throughout all its 23 campuses that other higher ed institutions can use as a blueprint to diversify their campuses in spite of the recent SCOTUS rulings on Affirmative Action. Higher Education The multiple crises beginning in 2020 have presented both challenges and opportunities for change in four-year residential colleges and universities. Evidence indicates that the historic structure of administrative and student services is increasingly mismatched to the needs of a diverse and stressed student body born in a digital age. Inspired by his leadership in a university-wide initiative that focused on how students' interactions with both academic and professional staff affect their success and well-being, Scott A. Bass presents fresh insights on the inner workings of traditional nonprofit four-year degree residential institutions. The book describes the influences of history, tradition, and internal and external pressures on the American university, highlighting its evolution to its staid and fragmented structure; it distills voices of students, faculty, and staff; and it explores how successful organizations outside of higher education deliver services, with potential applicability for the academy's ability to meet students where they are.

In a public letter, three West Virginia University faculty have bravely spoken out against the debilitating cuts planned by their university's administration. I wanted to share a quotation in which they connect these cuts to public higher education in their state with the present and future health of our nation's democracy. They write: "The crucial role of public universities to democracy is why the most important battles in the modern history of our country—from the Black freedom struggle to antiwar organizing—have happened on the campuses of public universities. Now is no different; this is our crossroads." Public universities are an investment in the public. I concur with the authors of this letter that the irresponsible, devastating decimation of WVU by its administration will inflict long term damage on the people of West Virginia and beyond. Public education is positive freedom.
