The risk of blood clots largely disappears within 2 to 4 weeks after stopping hormone-based birth control, according to a new study in Blood. Combined hormonal contraceptives have long been known to increase the risk of blood clots. What has been less clear is how long this effect lingers once a person stops using them. Several medical guidelines recommend stopping hormonal contraceptives ahead of certain medical events, such as major surgery, but most do not specify how long someone should be off birth control beforehand. This study is the first to provide such confirmatory guidance on the best timing to stop contraception. Spotting During Pregnancy: Causes, Risks, and Latest Treatment Approaches #pregnancy #womenshealth #obgyn As a Gynecologist, if I find the most common question asked by expecting moms - "Is my spotting a serious concern for me or my baby" Of course, Spotting during pregnancy can be a frightening experience for expecting mothers. Knowing the causes, risks, and treatment options is crucial for peace of mind and a healthy pregnancy. Causes of Spotting: 1. Implantation bleeding: This light bleeding occurs when the fertilized egg implants in the uterine lining (around the time of a missed period). Cervical changes also cause it. Increased blood flow and cervical sensitivity during pregnancy can cause spotting after intercourse. 2. Threatened miscarriage: Spotting can be a sign of a threatened miscarriage, but not always. 3. Ectopic pregnancy: A fertilized egg implanting outside the uterus can cause bleeding. This is a medical emergency. 4. Placental issues: Later in pregnancy, spotting could be due to placental abruption (placenta separating from the uterine wall) or placenta previa (placenta covering the cervix). How to assess or know the Risk Potential: The amount, color, and timing of spotting can offer clues about the underlying cause. Consult your Gynecologist immediately for: (i) Heavy bleeding (soaking a pad in an hour) (ii) Severe cramping (iii) Dizziness or fainting (iv) Passage of tissue Treatment Approaches: Treatment for spotting depends on the cause. There are no current "one-size-fits-all" treatment options for spotting specifically. However, some general approaches may be used by medical professionals: A. Pelvic rest: Doctors might recommend reduced activity to minimize further irritation. B. Hormonal supplements: In some cases, progesterone supplements may be offered to support the pregnancy. C. Hospitalization: If a serious complication like an ectopic pregnancy is suspected, immediate hospitalization might be necessary. The Latest Developments in Spotting Treatment: While there aren't groundbreaking new treatments specifically for spotting, advancements in prenatal care can lead to earlier detection and management of any underlying issues that might cause spotting. Focus on preventative measures: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, prenatal vitamins, and regular checkups with your doctor can significantly reduce pregnancy complications. Thus, Spotting during pregnancy can be a normal occurrence, but it's always best to consult your doctor for a proper diagnosis and personalized care plan. We're extremely proud to announce that Percept's Dr Nicole Daniels single-authored article, "Ultrasound scans as risk rituals in obstetric prenatal care in South Africa" has been published in the "Health, Risk & Society" Journal. In the article, Daniels writes: "I examine collective maternity risk understandings and practices from the dual-perspective of obstetricians and pregnant persons, focusing in particular on the role of ultrasound scans. Contributing to socio-cultural theories on collective risks, I draw upon data from a two and a half year, multisite ethnography that traced fourteen women and seven obstetricians’ corresponding experiences of private-sector childbirth in Cape Town. My findings show that ultrasounds, as habitual practices, are well-established as safe, yet generate medico-legal risks for obstetricians and delivery risks for pregnant women, while managing risks to the unborn. The unborn, culturally sanctioned as precious, emerges as central to the purposes of the ultrasound risk ritual that warrants both self-protective precaution and collective duty on behalf of both social groups." The full article can be accessed on "Taylor & Francis Online" below. Taylor & Francis Group #ultrasounds #pregnancy #obstetricprenatalcare #riskrituals #researcharticle #SouthAfrica
