Together, we will create positive change in our communities. At UVM’s RISE Summit Vermonters came together for two days to tackle the challenges facing our state and build a sustainable future. With a focus on research, innovation, and entrepreneurship, UVM is working with the community on new solutions to issues like clean water and economic prosperity. “Research universities like this one—with our technological, analytical and creative capacities – can be essential in helping to make our places healthy, prosperous, and purposeful,” said Patricia Coates, director of the Leahy Institute and the UVM Office of Engagement. Special guests included USDA Under Secretary for Research, Education, and Economics Dr. Chavonda Jacobs-Young, Tony Pipa, senior fellow in the Brookings Institution’s Center for Sustainable Development and host of the podcast, Reimagine Rural, U.S. Senator Peter Welch, retired U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy, and representatives from UVM’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) consortium partners Auburn University and the University of Wisconsin. The summit delivered on the theme of placemaking in Vermont, with many of the panels underscoring a key aim of the Leahy Institute and the university at large: connecting research and resources at UVM with communities engaged in the challenging work of making their places better. Luis Duffaut, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Biomedical Engineering, has been awarded a prestigious CAREER award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to continue his research to pave the way for safer — and more efficient — robots through data-driven innovation. This year was a major one for UVM students Zach Dunn ’23 and Jake Falanga ’24, who won the university's inaugural Joy and Jerry Meyers Cup for their business, Painting With Purpose. They walked away with $212,500 plus invaluable in-kind services to grow their Vermont-based business. University of Vermont’s Police Services officers are ditching horsepower for pedal power with the addition of e-bikes. “With a few modifications, like adding studded tires in snow, these are full year-round vehicles,” notes Jason Lawson, Deputy Chief of Operations at UVM’s Police Services.
