It was a great pleasure to attend 'Health and Disease: Experimental Philosophy of Medicine' at The Royal Institute of Philosophy. When can a condition already be considered a disease? When should medicine intervene? Is disease something objective or a product of an ableist society? Answering these questions can help us understand the way we think about health and disease and improve public health policies. Very interesting to learn about the research of Somogy Varga and Andrew J. Latham from Aarhus University on the topic!

Dr. Celina Yong, MD, MBA, MSc, a CARE faculty member, has recently published a paper titled “Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Aortic Valve Replacement Among Medicare Beneficiaries in the United States, 2012-2019” in the American Journal of Medicine. The study found that aortic valve replacement rates within 6 months of aortic stenosis admission are lower for Black, Hispanic, and Asian individuals compared to White individuals. These race-related differences in aortic stenosis treatment reflect complex issues in diagnosis and management, warranting a comprehensive reassessment of the entire care spectrum for disadvantaged populations. Dr. I-Min Lee is an associate epidemiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, and a researcher on physical activity. She and her colleagues wanted to look at the basis for 10,000 steps and its validity. Their new study in JAMA Internal Medicine answers two questions about mortality: How many steps a day are associated with lowering the mortality rate? Imagine wanting to get a second medical opinion and you are given the clinic's partner or someone who went to the same Residency/Medical School. That's not a second opinion, that's a confirmation of the first opinion...not the same thing. We are not the same thing.
