Excited and honored to speak about the #EuropeanGreenDeal and its cross-sectoral and societal implications at South Tyrol's bilingual #Summerschool2023 with a great line-up of #femaleleaders. While many decision-makers and observers tend to see our rural and peripheral regions as strategic hinterlands, these are the actual make-or-break spots of the #greentransition. Right here in #Europe and in the #USA alike. Conflicts around #landuse #nature #biodiversity #agriculture #foodsecurity #energytransition abound. These conflicts harbor great #risk of destabilizing the societal, political and economic fabric of our habitat regions. We're urgently invited to develop a whole new #subnational awareness, and formats of active #subnationaldiplomacy #entrepeneurship #socialinnovation. #Greentransition and #ruralinnovation belong together. The New European Bauhaus is a fantastic programme on #communities #creativity #transition, also #transatlantic relations are highly relevant with a view to our coming challenges. https://lnkd.in/dXj-FMMS Marian Schreier Patrizia Isabelle Nanz Michaela Kauer Philipp Heel Anton Mattle Veronika Sexl Irene Häntschel-Erhart Vera Winthagen Borislava Woodford Schneider Jürgen Kienzl Karl Corinna Visser Hannah Abdullah Nicola Lightner Sudha David-Wilp Catherine Fieschi Ivan Vejvoda Karolina Wigura Marian Cramers Emine Etili David Schacht Ruth Williams Christian Gsodam Daniel Sachs Karl "Charly" Kleissner Matthias Koch Bernhard Knoll-Tudor Elsa Benhöfer Thomas Seifert

In the Austrian alps for the European Forum Alpbach from today onwards ⛰️ Right after arriving, I had the pleasure to moderate a fireside chat with Narasimha Rao, whose research at Yale School of the Environment and International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) examines the relationship between energy systems, human development and climate change. 🌏 Organized through Club Alpbach Belgium Brussels, the topic of the talk was “energy, climate and well-being: how the EU can amplify a global energy transition that ensures decent living standards“ 🇪🇺 It was an insightful discussion between Professor Rao, myself and the many attending scholarship holders from across disciplines and geographies. My 3 key take-aways: - Ensuring a decent living standard for all of humanity does not necessarily require much additional energy supply➡️ - Consumer behavior patterns and social norms might portray a perception of well-being that is often incompatible with minizing environmental impact 🌱 - The concept of fundamental human needs has traditionally been associated/measured with economic growth, while other important dimensions were ignored 😞 This was a truly inspiring start! I‘m very much looking forward to further days of intellectual discussions 💬 and interdisciplinary inspiration💡! And definitely reach out if you are in town😀

What do scientists do on research vessels? This informative and entertaining tour of the R/V Sikuliaq [see-KOO-lee-auk] explains what NSF-funded researchers do to collect data and understand the marine system. How many collaborating institutions do you see? How many types of science and what is the range of career stages of the people onboard? How many computer monitors does it take to display data on a research cruise? Can you play ping-pong on a ship that is rolling? This was played during a live event from the ship. Learn about future events by signing up for email updates from the Office of Polar Programs (https://lnkd.in/ehXXJTN5). Well done JR, Natalie, Josh and all the contributors. https://lnkd.in/e3gziFJr

In her presentation at #SER2023 on wetland restoration in the California Bay Delta, PhD student Elsie Platzer emphasizes the challenges of restoring ecosystems altered by massive landscape changes. Her research focuses on aquatic habitat types, mainly managed wetland ponds, slew channels, and tidal restorations. Elsie's key finding was the surprising dominance of native fish populations in managed wetland ponds, in contrast to tidal habitats that housed non-native predators. This discrepancy prompted a critical question: are tidal restorations genuinely benefiting native fish, or are they becoming breeding grounds for non-native species? Her research underscores the need for active management and monitoring of restoration efforts, especially in highly altered ecosystems. It also highlights the importance of exploring alternative habitat types, like managed wetlands, where invasive species can be controlled more effectively. As restoration plans continue, Elsie's work serves as a reminder to ensure that designs align with the intended goals and functionality in preserving these vital ecosystems. I have been always drawn to communities, the togetherness of different kinds and yet sceptic about collectives. Some forms are inherited, such as religion or ascendency, like growing up in the Buenos Aires Jewish community; others are tendencies and curiosity, for me was choosing performing arts in all its forms - dance, theater, circus, puppet theater, you name it - as a way to connect with people. In this round, the academic or post-academic it feels a different twist. MEiA brings diversity and yet commonality of an intellectual-research kind that I deeply enjoy. And yet touches upon belonging, connection, and creating a space to meet - in a relatively new country and a learning arena. MEiA Gathering nr. 1
MEiA Alumni Gathering Dear all, We hope that you are enjoying the first signs of spring, now that nature is slowly awakening. With Spring in sight, our Alumni event is also coming up soon! If you want to participate and share (a part of) your practice, please send us your ideas, and propositions for this gathering, preferably before 25 February at the latest. In addition, we wanted to propose to consider this gathering on Friday, April 5 at Volkstuin West Rotterdam. as a low-key collective exploration of what a MEiA community could potentially look like. What needs and desires are present, and in which ways can we continue to create a connection between us? We will facilitate a group conversation to share ideas about how to bring this community to life. Let us meet and spend some time together while sharing food and thoughts, as simple as it can be. We are looking forward to meeting you (again) in the garden. Warmly, Natalia Amelia Saied, Jesse van Oosten & Ingrid Commandeur

With all we're learning about the combining the power of #artificialintelligence and #emotionalintelligence, what more can we achieve by integrating an appreciation of #culturalintelligence ? See this great article on how a #nativeamerican canoe journey from Boston to New York revealed the value of cultural intelligence in ensuring our progress is sustainable and learns from the past. https://lnkd.in/e3e75u5K
