Erin Gillaspie, BS ’04, is our next #40GatorsUnder40 honoree. Trailblazer Erin Gillaspie, MD, knew from an early age that she was destined to be a lung cancer surgeon. Her grandfather died of the disease, a difficult experience that spurred her to fast-track her education and enter medical school at the age of 19. She is the chief of thoracic surgery and an associate professor at the Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska — one of the few women in the world to serve in such a leadership role. Erin’s career began in 2016 when she became an assistant professor of thoracic surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. There she started a successful robotic thoracic surgery program that transformed the center’s clinical practice and patient outcomes. In tandem, she worked with the Vanderbilt Institute for Surgical Engineering to design new surgical devices and imaging applications to improve surgery, attracting millions in grant funding. She is among the few surgeons to serve as an institutional and national principal investigator on lung cancer trials. She has been recognized with teaching and patient care awards along with membership in numerous honor societies. One of her joys is mentoring students and residents to guide career development, collaborate in research and sponsor scholarships. She holds a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from the University of Florida, a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Miami and a Master of Public Health (epidemiology) from Vanderbilt University. She completed a general surgery residency at Bassett Medical Center and a thoracic surgery fellowship at Mayo Clinic Rochester. #GoGators #GatorNation
