At UD, Yanbao Yu has revolutionized proteomics with a new, quick, and affordable method for preparing protein samples. This approach, detailed in Cell Reports Methods, is universally compatible and simplifies the analysis process. Proteomics, the study of protein changes, aids in drug discovery, disease diagnosis, and health management. UD doctoral student Bhoktear Mahbub Khan led a workshop in Nigeria to explore opportunities and challenges of scaling up irrigation. Despite abundant freshwater resources, less than 3% of Nigeria's cropland is irrigated. The workshop, attended by over 60 delegates, aimed to identify stakeholders, analyze irrigated cropland distribution, and assess water sources for expansion. Barry Joyce, a history professor at UD, is working to correct misconceptions about Native American history in Delaware. His project emphasizes that the Lenape and Nanticoke tribes are still present in the state. This year, 36 Delaware educators attended workshops themed “America and Delaware is our Home: The Indigenous and Latinx Experience from 1900 to the Present.” Funded by a Library of Congress grant, these workshops are part of a three-year program called "Indigenous and Latinx Delaware" (ILD). This spring, UD hosted the Forecaster Cup, a competition that welcomed teams of hospitality students from around the world to match wits using hotel data to predict occupancy in pursuit of a $1,000 prize. Alfred Lerner College of Business & Economics at University of Delaware placed second overall. Led by Professor Zvi Schwartz, this global event saw a UD team earn third place among over 50 universities. UD undergraduate student Evan McArdle is making the most of his summer by working with Project Recover, a unique combination of travel and service. For over 30 years, Project Recover has been the nation’s leading citizen-led nonprofit dedicated to searching, locating, documenting, recovering, and repatriating the more than 81,500 American service members missing in action. The organization also brings recognition and closure to the estimated 5,000,000 MIA Gold Star family members. This opportunity came to McArdle through a UD study abroad environmental science internship course taking place in the Chuuk Islands in Micronesia. “The opportunity to work with Project Recover aligned with my mindset, just in the objective and the whole focus of the project. I think it's valuable.
