The number of organizations with net-zero targets are rising rapidly. But to make progress on greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction commitments, a lot of effort is required to gather data and analytics. Data collected by internally developed software is often too basic to be used strategically. Different industries also face different challenges, and therefore require different solutions. According to Gartner®, “the carbon accounting and management software market is fragmented and immature, creating uncertainty and risk for buyers.“ Here at Univers, we offer an end-to-end decarbonization system inclusive of carbon accounting and management. Brand agnostic, with the provision of real-time data, we can cater to enterprises hailing from all sorts of industries. 🌍 Achieving Science-based targets needs a Scope 3 emissions focus The importance Scope 3 emissions has grown significantly over the last few years, but the barriers to measuring and reducing them has been a constant challenge for enterprises of all sizes! The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) released a research document with support from Boston Consulting Group identifying barriers to Scope 3 emissions targets setting. Just in last 5 years, over 70% of organisations have re-baselined their emissions, 50% of which have been due to methodological changes e.g., changing emissions factor databases or methods. Let’s deep dive to find the key insights from the research and how Carboledger is addressing them : 🌱 Lack of access to supplier data is a barrier to Scope 3 baseline 85% respondents of the survey believe data access is a barrier to developing an inventory. This is primarily due to a lack of supplier data; only 6% of respondents use supplier specific emissions factors today. Without measured primary data, companies often utilise average emissions factors. However, secondary data can limit comparability of footprints and create challenges for tracking the impact of actions required to deliver progress. 🌱 Limited influence over the value chain 81% of respondents identify the ability to influence suppliers in their value chain as a barrier to delivery. They cite factors including supplier fragmentation, supplier disintermediation, degree of negotiating power, nature of supplier relationship and supplier willingness to act. 🌱 Emissions reductions at the cost of company growth 58% of respondents find company growth to be a barrier to delivering a scope 3 science-based target (especially relevant for the 57% of respondents with absolute rather than intensity targets). In addition, 61% cite the cost of decarbonizing the supply chain as a barrier, particularly driven by higher OPEX due to green premiums for low carbon products and services. How Carboledger supports your organisation’s Scope 3 decarbonisation? Carboledger helps chemical companies decarbonise their supply chain with accurate, supplier-specific PCF data that is standardised and compliant. Our secure network connects suppliers, customers and carbon solutions providers, allowing enterprises to seamlessly share, access and collaboratively manage primary PCF information. With our help, companies can reduce dependency on estimations-based carbon accounting and industry averages, all the while enhancing customer relations and maintaining 100% control over confidential data. 🌍 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗲 3 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀? 🌍 Measuring Scope 3 emissions is essential for several reasons: - 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Customers and investors increasingly expect companies to disclose their Scope 3 emissions and take action to reduce them. - 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀: A robust plan to measure and manage these emissions can enhance brand health, attract new customers, and build investor confidence. - 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: Various frameworks and regulations, such as GRI, CDP, and SBTi, mandate Scope 3 emissions accounting. 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗲 3 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol provides the most widely accepted framework, defining 15 categories that cover both upstream and downstream activities. Key methods include: 1. Spend-Based Method: Estimates emissions based on the financial value of goods and services purchased from suppliers. 2. Fuel-Based Method: Calculates emissions based on the types and amounts of fuels used. 3. Activity-Based Method: Uses material weight and other units of measurement instead of financial data. 4. Supplier-Specific Method: Collects specific emissions data directly from suppliers. 5. Hybrid Method: Combines various methods for flexibility and comprehensiveness. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗲 3 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 Quantifying Scope 3 emissions involves three main steps: 1. Data Collection: Gather data from various sources, including suppliers and value chain partners, using industry averages and proxies. 2. Calculation: Use appropriate methods to calculate emissions for each of the 15 categories defined by the GHG Protocol. 3. Aggregation and Reporting: Aggregate emissions at the corporate level to assess impact and set reduction targets. Managing Scope 3 emissions comes with challenges, such as data availability, complex value chains, and limited control over indirect emissions. Some Best practices include: - Engage Suppliers: Work closely with suppliers to collect accurate data and develop strategies for reducing emissions. - Leverage Technology: Use digital tools and platforms to streamline data collection and analysis. - Set Progressive Targets: Establish and regularly update targets for reducing Scope 3 emissions. - Continuous Improvement: Foster a culture of continuous improvement by regularly reviewing and refining your emissions management approach. #Sustainability #ClimateChange #Scope3Emissions #EnvironmentalImpact #GreenhouseGas #CorporateResponsibility #SupplyChain #SustainableBusiness #Innovation
