Does Tyla’s Grammy win signal a shift in the global music landscape? This year, amidst the glittering array of stars and historic wins, a new narrative unfolded—one that might redefine how we perceive African music on the global stage. In the brand new Best African Music Performance category, Tyla scooped the award for her hit ‘Water’, a track that’s firmly in the Amapiano camp. The genre, coming out of South Africa, is changing the conversation around African music; Afrobeats isn't the only game in town – not by a long chalk. But this isn't just about a new category or a single award. It's about the recognition of diverse talents, and evolving global sounds. Amapiano's popularisation, led by artists like Tyla, signifies a broader acceptance and celebration of African music, beyond the familiar sound of Afrobeats. But why Amapiano, and why now? And what does this mean for the future of global music scenes, from K-Pop to the next undiscovered genre waiting in the wings? Dive into the full story behind this Grammy milestone, explore the controversy surrounding the new category, and discover what this could herald for the future of music on the global stage. 📖 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eDr5D7vF #Grammys2024 #amapiano #musictech #musicindustry #musicintelligence

Superfans: A billion-dollar oportunity for musicians After going through the very insightful Trapital Report on the music industry that Dan Runcie, Simon Jacobs and David Boyle put together, this is one the things that really caught my attention: Superfans could lead to a $4.2 billion-opportunity for the industry, per Goldman Sachs. That’s because these individuals are willing to spend twice as much on music than the average music listeners. Goldman Sachs also predicts that “20% of listeners are superfans of least one artist”. What do these superfans want: ➡️ Early access to tickets and music ➡️ Community and merchandise ➡️ Products and services that offer them an identity The report also states that although these superfans would follow their favorite artists all around the globe, musicians must not see them as “money pits.” For example, Bad Bunny fans were not happy after seeing how expensive are the tickets for his upcoming tour. That’s because people are experiencing the effects of “funflation”. In the United States, for example, this is causing 60% of consumers to reduce their expenses in live entertainment because of higher prices, according to the The Wall Street Journal. To cite the Trapital report once again, “the challenge is to serve superfans without treating them like ATMs.” 📸 BBC

It's hard to make it in the music industry. Streaming platforms now account for 48.3% of global recorded music industry revenues, amounting to $17.5 billion in 2022. This has changed not just the way people listen to the music but the very economics of the industry, particularly in terms of revenue and contract negotiations. Artists face a hard choice: sacrifice their identity & artistic integrity for fame or risk obscurity. The idea of "selling one's soul" has been a repeated theme in the music industry. Many would argue that it’s just a metaphor for sacrificing artistic integrity for fame and money. But can it be more than just a figure of speech & is there a way to dance with the devil without losing your soul? Trying to figure out exactly that in our new piece 👇 #musicindustry #musicbusiness #music https://lnkd.in/d2v_q_ri
