Download our 2022 Impact Report! 2022 was a significant year for Climate Neutral Group. In January of 2022, the business celebrated its merger with Anthesis Group, the sustainability activator, and the largest group of dedicated sustainability professionals globally. Later that year, in October, together with esteemed colleagues and long-standing clients, CNG celebrated 20 years of helping businesses and organisations reduce their impact on the climate by align these efforts with the Paris Climate Agreement and staying ‘On Track’ towards a net zero carbon economy by 2050. In this most recent edition of the CNG Impact Report, CNG Managing Director, René Toet and Anthesis Group CEO, Stuart McLachlan reflect on the first year of collaboration between their organisations and discuss their plans for the future. The 2022 report also shares an update on the business’ internally developed compensation projects, that aims to combat environmental and climate issues that not only reduce or remove carbon emissions but also enhance the well-being of communities and promote biodiversity all the while, generating carbon credits. These projects improve soil health, boost biodiversity, and contribute to the transition towards more sustainable practices while reducing emissions from fossil fuels. “We want to do something meaningful to move the dialogue on climate in a positive direction. How do you deploy expertise to deliver the kind of solutions that the world needs – and how do we measure the effectiveness of the deployment of our talent and expertise? Motivated by these considerations, Anthesis and CNG set a target that reflects our ambition,” says Rene. #CellAg offers a unique opportunity for global food and consumer goods companies looking to reduce their Scope 3 emissions, which are indirect upstream and downstream emissions linked to a company’s value chain. If cell-cultured products can be produced at scale in an environmentally sustainable manner, there is a big opportunity for global companies to partner with cell ag startups to improve the sustainability of their own product supply chains. Previous studies have shown cell-cultured foods may be more sustainable than conventional ones. #futureoffood #cellularagriculture

“Food and agriculture is the new frontier of climate change.” “When you use the time value of carbon, it tells you overwhelmingly, at least 95% of the work we need to do is cutting emissions and cutting them really, really fast. Carbon removal, in all its forms: biological, oceans, regenerative agriculture, forest, machines, whatever, should be maybe less than 5%.” “If we have any shot of a Paris-like outcome, somewhere between 1.5 and 2 degrees, it’s going to be because we hit the emergency brakes really hard in the next five years and those are going to be methane, methane, methane.” “Methane in agriculture (is) a little bit harder, because it’s mainly beef and dairy…Another big emergency brake is stopping deforestation. It’s one of the single biggest emitters of greenhouse gasses, on earth, by far, and the biggest driver of biodiversity loss and one of the biggest drivers of water problems and air quality problems and health problems.” “Venture capital has made two mistakes. It bets on expensive, shiny, high-tech things quite often, rather than the cheap, practical things we need to do now but never seem to get done. And sometimes they chase hype…Are you really measuring impact, or are you chasing hype and clear exits?” “There are things that are just sticky that we don’t seem to fix. Like food waste…40% of the world’s food never gets eaten…Where are the startups tackling food waste? I would like every supply chain to be equipped with sensors from the field to the refrigerated trucks to the international shipping to my refrigerator. Tell me when food is going bad. Instead of relying on old dating stamps that don’t mean anything, how about we have technology that helps us figure out what food is going bad and what’s still good…How about new technologies that monitor methane?” “(Climate change solutions are) the biggest business opportunity in human history. But stop chasing shiny objects. That’s not business, that’s ego. That’s science fiction, not good business sense. Let’s go do things that actually give the world goods and services today that we desperately need. And do it now.” “(Because) every year you wait to deploy a climate solution you lose a chance at being effective...You lose about 7% a year for every year you wait in terms of its ultimate impact on climate change. And that’s compounding…You wait 10 years, you lose half the effectiveness. You wait 20 years, you lose three-quarters of the effectiveness.” What can we do? - Protect Nature (reduce deforestation) - Waste Less (waste less food) - Shift To Healthier Diets (less beef especially) - Farm Better (more regenerative ag) Thank you for your continued data-driven leadership, Jonathan Foley & Project Drawdown! #food #sustainability #socialentrepreneurship #impactinvesting

Love this! Addressing methane emissions from rotting food is another great solution. When organic waste decomposes in landfills, it undergoes anaerobic (without oxygen) decomposition, leading to the production of methane gas. Extracta is contributing to the reduction of methane gas production through the repurposing of agricultural food waste into nutrient-rich ingredients. The focus on a circular food economy aligns well with the global efforts to address environmental challenges and promote sustainability.

I help people and organizations incorporate nature tech to tackle food waste and build healthy soil.
FYI food waste in landfill rots in the absence of oxygen to release methane, and woops, we were underestimating how much methane is generated! It's really a simple solution to tackle - more soil building, everywhere. Want better food? Use compost. Want to eat healthier? Compost it yourself. Want to feel like you're making a difference? Start a community compost. Want jobs? Encourage composting businesses. Want a career? Join our mission. Nature does not waste. Let's be more like nature.
In case you missed the recent news, landfills are emitting far more methane than previously reported -- about 80% of landfills tracked by satellite meet or exceed the “super-emitter” threshold set by EPA for the oil and gas sector. The solution doesn't require future tech innovations or AI, it's plain old fashioned collection and processing infrastructure. Investing in compost infrastructure for food scraps and compostable packaging provides incredible environmental, social, and economic benefit. Raise your voice in local, state, and federal conversations and ask for more compost services! https://p2a.co/XY2ETEb https://lnkd.in/erZ6mYtE

Biochar is a ‘shovel-ready’ climate technology, but can it scale up? The soil soot is a small-scale solution that climate advocates — and corporations — want more of. The glorified charcoal is rare on American farms, yet it has become a focal point in the movement to turn agriculture into a climate solution. Biochar can lock up planet-warming carbon for hundreds, sometimes thousands of years, and unlike other, higher-tech technologies that suck carbon out of the air, it’s relatively straightforward and accessible. “Look at the playing field. What else is out there that’s commercially viable right now?” said Kathleen Draper, board chair at the International Biochar Initiative. “The reality is: It’s a shovel-ready technology.” Biochar now accounts for the vast majority of the carbon dioxide that has supposedly been removed from the air after being purchased by companies seeking to offset their planet-warming emissions, according to cdr.fyi (http://cdr.fyi/), a website that tracks carbon removal data. A study published in March in the Journal of Environmental Quality (https://lnkd.in/e6yhbGBN) also found that using biochar, which helps keep nutrients like nitrogen in the ground, could cut planet-warming nitrous oxide emissions from agriculture by almost one-fifth.
