The Lionesses begin their defence of the European Crown today as they return to Wembley to face Sweden in the opening game of the Euro 2025 qualifiers. They lifted their first major title when they won Euro 2022 in front of a packed and sold out Wembley with their victory over Germany. England have got a few difficult games ahead of them as they will be playing Sweden, France and the Republic of Ireland in order to get to the next round. Euro 2022 was a huge success for UEFA proving to be a landmark moment for women’s football in Europe, the total attendance more than doubled the previous record when the Euros was played in the Netherlands in 2017. However doubt has been cast over Switzerland’s ability to support the growth of women’s football after government funding was reduced due to cost-cutting. Tournament organizers in Switzerland were expecting to be allocated funding closer to £17.4m and the President of the Swiss parliamentary group for sport has said that the Federal Council’s cost -cutting decision was a “scandalous approach and “an affront to equality”. Women’s and girls football has developed enormously in recent years and we need to acknowledge this across the globe, we are still fighting for equality in 2024!!

Great article by samindra kunti, a Forbes contributor, shedding light on the process leading to Saudi Arabia being awarded the 2034 World Cup. As someone passionate about sports and international development, the World Cup should unite humanity. However, the unchecked power in this decision-making is a governance failure. Shouldn't there be an external regulator for fairness? Can we create a scorecard based on specific parameters to ensure transparency? What can we learn from successful governance in other sports or activities? The upcoming European Court of Justice ruling in the Super League case could bring hope for change. Is the current leadership fit to lead the global game? I'd love your opinions. How do you feel about the 2034 World Cup hosting rights, and what steps can safeguard such decisions? #SportsGovernance #FIFA #WorldCup2026 #Transparency #GoodGovernance #ChangeNeeded #WorldCup2034 #FootballBusiness #Sports #SportBusiness #GovernanceReform

#EURO2024 is in full swing and football fever is high! When France won the 2018 World Cup, South African comedian Trevor Noah celebrated by saying, "Africa has won the World Cup," referring to many French players having African heritage. France’s ambassador to the US objected, arguing that Noah's comment implied only white players are truly French, which echoed racist rhetoric in the country. In an insightful interview, NAI's senior researcher Jesper Bjarnesen delves into the topic of #FootballMigration and recommends some compelling reads he has reviewed: "The Precarity of Masculinity" (https://lnkd.in/dQ9fN2gd) explores how young men in Cameroon use football to find purpose and structure in their challenging lives, while also dreaming of making it in Europe. "African Football Migration" (https://lnkd.in/dzsCmv8F) provides an overview of African players' experiences in the global football industry. Jesper was also on the PhD committee for Emy Lindbergs PhD thesis (https://lnkd.in/dEn9ea5A) about Ghanaian football migration to Sweden. Simultaneously, African football is becoming more competitive and international. The Africa Cup of Nations, for example, is attracting more international interest than ever before. NAI recorded a podcast (https://lnkd.in/dxuwMfGe) about the latest tournament with Sebastian van Baalen, Carl Rommel, Oscar Rothstein and Buster Emil Kirchner. For those interested in African migration to Europe more broadly, a book coming out with Routledge in September (https://lnkd.in/dhZYYzzR) and a policy seminar (https://lnkd.in/dqFWkDEy) involving Jesper offer deeper insights. Importantly, most African migration is not towards Europe. To understand the broader context, Jesper's Policy Note (https://lnkd.in/da__2Wyq) on African migration is a great starting point. #sciencetopolicy

The dynamic realm of sports continues to evolve, adapting to the evolving desires and preferences of society. In recent decades, 5-a-side football, also known as small-sided football, has gained notable popularity across various European countries, including the United Kingdom, France, and the Netherlands. This compact and high-speed game offers an accessible playing experience cherished by both seasoned footballers and novices. While this trend spreads internationally, 5-a-side football is still in its infancy in Belgium. Despite a few local initiatives aiming to introduce this variation, a national strategy and structure was yet to be established. Consequently, the opportunities for players to engage in 5-a-side football remained limited, holding Belgium back from this global development. Commissioned by the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA), Hypercube has undertaken the responsibility to provide insight into the evolution and current state of 5-a-side football in neighbouring countries. The primary goal of this research was to examine the potential of 5-a-side football for Belgium and explore the possible role of the RBFA. We are enthused to play an active role in shaping the future of football in Belgium, collaborating with RBFA to pave the way for 5-a-side football. Our approach entailed a comprehensive analysis including discussions with prominent experts and stakeholders within the domain of 5-a-side football. We did not only examine the benefits and challenges of this style of play but also drew inspiration from successful implementations in other nations. We are eager to closely follow the upcoming steps and observe if 5-a-side football in Belgium can emulate the success of neighboring countries. #5ASideFootball #FutureOfFootball
