#GenerationRestoration cities:
I never managed to get to #Curitiba when it was first popular in the world environment community in the 1990s - I avoid flying, and never had a direct work invitation. But back in 1972, the city's mayor, the late urbanist and visionary Jaime Lerner, implemented a sustainable city plan, and Curitiba's impressive achievements were much later well known to me in the 1990s as a model for sustainable development. It gained international attention for its environmental initiatives in the 1990s, after hosting the World Cities Forum in 1992. Congratulations Curitiba and of course recently #Seattle on being a #GenerationRestoration increasingly regenerative City!
Green spaces
Curitiba has 28 public parks and has planted 1.5 million trees since the 1970s. In 2007, it was named the third greenest city in the world.
Bus Rapid Transit
Curitiba established one of the world's first bus rapid transit systems in 1974, and the model has been replicated in over 150 cities worldwide. The system includes 30 hybrid buses that reduce fuel needs and pollutant emissions.
Recycling
Curitiba's That Is Not Garbage program allows residents to exchange trash for tokens, which can then be used to purchase produce. 90% of the city participates in the recycling program.
Urban planning
Curitiba's urban planning integrates roads, bus rapid transit, and land use. The city also avoids installing canals to mitigate flooding, instead developing parks.
Education
Environmental issues have been integrated into Curitiba's school curriculum since 1971.
Industrial regulation
The Curitiba Industrial City has strict environmental regulations and doesn't allow polluting industries....
Here's an old but great Guardian article from 2016: https://lnkd.in/gq4yzq_f
