When Eric Alper isn't working at UMass Memorial Health as Chief Clinical Informatics Officer, he is often seen snapping photos. "It is definitely my passion outside of my work," he said. Q: When did you pick up photography? "I caught the photography bug during medical school. I got a great deal on an SLR camera at Lechmere at the Greendale Mall. I went to a photography presentation shortly afterward, and I was hooked." Q: What do you most enjoy photographing? "I mostly enjoy capturing wildlife and landscapes, a beautiful sunrise or sunset…. I love striking colors and pleasing compositions. One of my favorite photography experiences was with puffins. I visited Machias Seal Island for 2 hours and captured 2000 photos. I like to capture pictures of people in nature. And capturing portraits of people or animals in a way that expresses feeling more so than the typical smiling portrait…. I love to share my photography with others, although I only print photos rarely and sell them even less frequently. It’s a joy to gift photographs to people who enjoy them. I have been fortunate to have had a number of my photos serve as the Epic “splash screen” when Epic first opens, so people see my photographs thousands of times per day. I think that sharing a little bit of beauty in this way helps to create a little bit of zen, mindfulness, and beauty in an otherwise sterile, chaotic environment. Dominika has been gracious to help me to share my photos in this way." Q: Where's your favorite place to take photos? "I’ll take photos almost anywhere but mostly when I travel. I love Acadia National Park, which I visit at least annually. The combination of the mountains next to the ocean, the rugged Maine coast, the wildlife, the varied weather all makes for outstanding photography opportunities. I feel most at peace when being in nature, taking pictures, especially in Acadia." Q: What's on your photography bucket list? "I was fortunate to do a safari in the past. I’d love to get back to Africa. I look forward to taking photos of polar bears and visiting the Galapagos, before climate change significantly affects additional populations. I’d love to do a portrait session with someone famous at some point." Check out photos from Dr. Alper's recent Downeast workshop.
