What are the Primary Reasons behind Railway Accidents? Infrastructure Defects: The railway infrastructure, which includes tracks, bridges, overhead wires, and rolling stock, is often defective due to poor maintenance, ageing, vandalism, sabotage, or natural disasters. Much of the infrastructure was built in the 19th and 20th centuries and has not been upgraded to meet the growing demand and modern standards. The railway system also suffers from a lack of funds, corruption, and inefficiency, which hamper its development and maintenance. Moreover, many routes are operating at over 100% capacity, which increases the risk of accidents due to congestion and overloading. Human Errors: The railway staff, who are responsible for operating, maintaining, and managing the trains and tracks, are prone to human errors due to fatigue, negligence, corruption, or disregard for safety rules and procedures. Human errors can result in wrong signalling, miscommunication, over speeding, or overlooking defects or hazards. The railway staff also lack adequate training and communication skills, which affect their performance and coordination. Signalling Failures: The signalling system, which controls the movement and direction of trains on the tracks, can fail due to technical glitches, power outages, or human errors. Signalling failures can lead to trains running on the wrong track, colliding with other trains or stationary objects, or overshooting stations. For example, the recent train accident in Odisha was reportedly caused by a change in electronic interlocking that was not communicated properly to the drivers. Unmanned level crossings (UMLCs): UMLCs are places where railway tracks crossroads without any barriers or signals to regulate traffic.

Here at Hovedstadens Letbane L3, we are preparing to roll out the first Rolling stock. Lilian, an old lady, is organising the ballast. The ballast tamper Lilian's primary function is to ensure railway tracks' stability and proper alignment by tamping or compacting the ballast, which is the layer of crushed stones or gravel supporting the tracks. Lilian has tines, vibrators, or hydraulic arms penetrating the ballast layer beneath the railway sleepers. These mechanisms apply pressure and vibration to the ballast, compacting and distributing it evenly around the sleepers. Lilian corrects any irregularities in track alignment and finalises the levelness. Well-maintained tracks are essential for safe train operations, and tamping machines are crucial in ensuring track stability, reducing the risk of accidents and derailments. Regular tamping minimizes track wear and tear, extending the lifespan of the railway infrastructure.#railway #rail #maintenance #tram #tramway #metro #subway #maintenanceengineering #siemensmobility

The Origins Of Permanent Way PART THREE (Last)🛤 Did you know this about the history of P-Way? The Industrial Revolution further developed these ideas. Wrought iron plates were added to reduce wear on the wooden baulks and later, cast iron plates and edge rails represented an improvement on this concept. Edge rails, introduced in 1789, raised the wheels above ground, enabling the use of flanged iron wheels. Between the late 1770s and around 1825, wrought iron rails were developed further and became strong enough to carry the weight of vehicles without the support of a longitudinal wooden baulk. This marked a significant milestone in the history of railway tracks we see today and work on. #RailwayHistory #PermanentWay #railhistory #railuk #ukrail

This is typical shape I of the cross-section of a track laid with Flat-footed Rails. ... These are shaped so for following purposes: The top portion or the HEAD of the rail is thicker to take up the impact of the fast moving wheels, and carry the load of trains preventing abrasion of the tracks.
