So here we are, this short video clip is of us milling a custom Last to make our custom made footwear on and what could potentially mark the conclusion of our timber-milling era for our custom shoe Lasts, we are now proudly embracing a more sustainable and efficient paradigm by transitioning to 3D printing for the creation of our custom shoe Lasts. Although our timber sourcing adheres to sustainable practices, the intricate journey from felling to milling, involving multiple stages like machining, shipping, docking, dressing, bonding, and milling, bears its own environmental footprint, along with noise and waste material within our own facility. This multi-step process has been the cornerstone of our in-house custom shoe Last production for over a decade, allowing us to fine-tune our craft and have total control of the outcome of our custom made footwear. However, the winds of change are here, and with the introduction of a mere 1.5 kilograms of filament, an exciting new chapter begins. The advent of 3D-printed Lasts heralds a new era for us, one characterized by efficiency, as waste becomes a thing of the past, and noise levels are significantly curbed. This transition underscores our unwavering commitment to a more sustainable future and our relentless pursuit of progress to create a better outcome at every level of our production with the fusion of cutting-edge innovation and responsible manufacturing practices. couple of months of journey in 30 seconds. #3dprintedfootwear Being a footwear designer for the past 5+ years in the 'traditional' system, it did not take much time for 3D printing convince me that it is the future. Is it for the masses? Maybe not, at this point. Like any new tech or introducing sustainable materials to your product, it will end up being costlier than your average Air Jordans. But is it cooler? That will be answered in the next decade ;) Is it the future in footwear development? 100%. This is exactly where this technology & everything peripheral to it, such as 3D foot scanning or 3D modelling for 3D printing aids in rewriting the traditional model. With consumer mindset shifting to a place where there is more information & intention on owing a product I can clearly see footwear will be something more to each & everyone. Standard Size charts will vanish. Brands will release products in half or quarter of the time. Heck we might just have to browse designs & print their own footwear at home according to occasion in 2030. As simple as "Ctrl+P". When it comes to footwear manufacturing, I find myself inclined towards creating a manufacturing tech and environment which allows one to be a passive observer rather than an active participant. You may wonder why. With three decades of experience witnessing the intricate laser dance with 3D printers, it took me several years to grasp the underlying challenge. The allure of manufacturing's mesmerizing spectacle can easily divert attention from the essential focus: achieving optimal output in terms of cost, speed, and quality. Embarking on visits to footwear factories in recent years, my primary interest lay in understanding their operations. I sought to quantify the resources and associated costs —be it manpower, energy, or floor space—necessary for producing a product of perceived value. What struck me was the multitude of fingers involved in the process, allowing for a straightforward calculation of potential margins based on factors such as regional salary average, rent per square meter, material expenses, energy consumption and so on. To my surprise, many of these factories seemed to defy economic logic, prompting me to question their continued viability. Another revelation dawned upon me: humans possess an inherent aversion to the unknown, often preferring to remain in their daily discomfort without taking any action over the uncertainty of change. The perceived slow demise is deemed preferable to the potential hastened demise that radical change might bring. It's all as fascinating paradox as the story about a boiling frog. When a frog is placed in boiling water, it will jump out immediately. However, if it is put in tepid water and the heat is slowly increased, the frog will remain until it cooks to death. #3DTI
