This is a really important piece of work being run by UK Black Comms Network and PRWeek UK. As PR Week put it: The One Step Forward Two Steps Black Survey is open to black and mixed black PR and communications professionals who work in UK PR – whether in-house, agency-side or running their own business. The research aims to uncover inequity where it exists, recognise successes in creating a diverse talent pipeline and retaining talent and, crucially, provide a benchmark for the industry to make change. It'd be awesome if you'd take a moment to respond to the survey that informs the data that, in turn, creates a platform for change Great piece here in PR Week where you can find out more: https://lnkd.in/ep7-qgqp https://lnkd.in/egydciNG

The Business of Forging a Shared Future Begins With Media Reparations- by Alicia Bell, Damaso Reyes, Joseph Torres and Collette Watson The U.S. media system has been a chief architect of our nation’s anti-Black narrative since 1619. Media reparations could help us finally move forward, to reconcile and repair the harm our media system has caused to the Black community. Early newspapers sold runaway-slave ads and acted as in-person brokers for the African slave trade, and some of those papers still operate today. Deceitful coverage in the Jim Crow era fueled lynchings and massacres, and Black journalists have faced deadly retaliation in every era. After uprisings erupted across major U.S. cities throughout the 1960s, the landmark Kerner Commission’s study noted that causes included a national media that “reflects the biases, the paternalism, the indifference of white America.” Martin Luther King Jr. remarked in 1967 that “a riot is the language of the unheard.” And today, as our nation engages in another widespread movement for racial justice -- including uprisings within The Los Angeles Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, podcast empire Gimlet Media and other organizations -- it’s urgently clear that we must finally address Kerner’s findings and realize a world in which Black voices, stories and truths are abundant. It’s time for media reparations. #media #reparations # diversity #newyorkiptv https://lnkd.in/e2smMpsA

My column from yesterday's Sunday Independent. "Last Thursday, a week on from his calamitous CNN debate performance, Joe Biden gave an interview to WURD radio in Philadelphia. The interview was part of an on-going clean up job: attempts by his campaign to calm Democratic fears that the US president is no longer up to the task of taking on Donald Trump. But during it, he garbled a few points together and ultimately said he was proud to have been “the first black woman to serve with a black president”. This kind of word salad happens in media interviews all the time; two distinct thoughts accidentally merge and incoherence is the result. It wouldn’t even be noted for another candidate. They’d be given the benefit of the doubt. But for Biden, it received a full story in The New York Times. That’s just one example of what should now be the accepted reality, which is Joe Biden’s debate performance has made it nearly impossible for him to win November’s US presidential election. Voters have decided that he’s slipped, and that his age-related performance issues are disqualifying for the role of president. As of this week, 79pc of independent voters view him as simply too old to do the job. The debate performance can’t be walked back. So now every single speech, every single verbal error, every single trailing thought will be examined under a microscope and will bring back up the question of his fitness for office. This will keep happening. Interview after interview, rally after rally. Biden will make a mistake, coverage will be dominated by the error and voters will be unable to focus on the issues. Given these slips are inevitable, it’ll make it impossible for Biden to regain any sort of momentum. Momentum he desperately needs given he’s now six points behind Trump with likely voters, according to New York Times post-debate polling. He’s even now is in trouble in New Mexico, a state Democrats haven’t lost since 2008. Biden has proven he lacks the communication capacity to prosecute the case against Trump himself Biden’s faltering debate performance had a secondary negative impact. It’s robbed him of the power of his surrogates. Presidential campaigns need more than one voice and the Democrats have powerful speakers in the likes of Gavin Newsom + Gretchen Whitmer. But the role is to amplify, not replace, the candidate’s voice. Biden has proven he lacks the communication capacity to prosecute the case against Donald Trump himself. And that means that every time another Democrat attacks Trump, instead of hearing the message, all voters will wonder is why can’t the president speak for himself? All this combined means the Democrats simply have to convince Biden to step aside before it’s too late. It would be a major call, it could backfire, but the alternative is a slow creep towards defeat. https://lnkd.in/e4RA3dSG
