Last year at #COP28, #UEFA announced that this years’ European Championship, the third largest sporting event worldwide, would be the most sustainable ever.
#Sustainability has been a fundamental, cross-sectional topic defining UEFA Euro 2024 bidding, organisational setup and decision making. A UEFA Football Sustainability Strategy 2024 Environmental, Social and Governance Strategy was prepared which had data-led practical initiatives incorporated which range from climate change through infrastructure to social advocacy.
In UEFA’s words:
- “We focus on football and its impact on society.
- We believe sustainability supports the success of European football
- We act in line with transparent, long-term objectives.
- We work as one team, with one common language and approach
- We advocate respect for human rights and the environment”
How is it looking ?
- No new stadiums were built for this Championships, although Germany had the head start of a large number of world class stadiums.
- Combination of measures have been taken to reduce energy use: efficient lighting, waste and water management etc.
- Travel. According to the Oko-Institut, 70% of the emissions figures for the tournament are from fan travel. Although local fans can be provided with more efficient rail and bus travel, it can be hard to reduce the footprint of large numbers of overseas fans. Player travel has been an interesting issue, with Germany, Switzerland and Portugal all pledging not to fly between games. In Euro 2016 (in France), 75% of transfers between games were air travel, whereas it is predicted for Euro 2024 this will be 25%.
Aside from initiatives, UEFA’s Climate Fund will allocate €25 for every tonne of CO2emissions produced as part of EURO 2024. These funds will be used to develop a sustainability conscious grassroots game.
Although EURO 2024 is inevitably going to produce a large carbon footprint UEFA has committed to #NetZero by 2040, under the Race to Zero, which will rely on transparent action plans and robust near-term targets.
