List: 23 people blocked from federal financial aid system (insidehighered.com) College administrators and university employees convicted of fraud are among the 23 people currently barred from participating in federal financial aid programs, according to a new public list from the Education Department. Department officials said in an online notice that the agency will update the list quarterly as part of an effort to deter misconduct, ensure program accountability and protect students and taxpayers. The department has taken several steps in the last few years to hold individuals personally accountable if their institution fails to operate in a financially responsible way. Twenty people connected with public, private nonprofit and for-profit colleges and universities are either suspended or debarred—a more permanent prohibition that can last up to three years or longer, depending on the circumstances—along with three others who aren’t affiliated with an institution.

Option 2: Boost advocacy! Option 3: Tighten up on student persistence. We know the students at risk the most — help them. This is a very interesting viewpoint on the type of relationship donors and colleges could have (or should have). Colleges should be clear about their mission in terms of the type of moral and intellectual formation students receive, and donors should seek to support schools whose vision of formation matches the impact that the donor would like to see.
What influence should donors have at the colleges they support?

The adoption of the Local Control Funding Formula in 2013 drastically changed the way education funding was distributed in California, making it more equitable through the allocation of additional funds to local educational agencies with higher percentages of underserved populations. What did not change was the amount of money in the system — a lingering problem that is still reflected in data today. And while student outcomes continue to improve, longstanding achievement gaps remain. Educational Consultant at AskDeanB.com. Bringing the lens of 38 years in elite US higher education to the mission of student access, centered on students from developing countries and diasporas.
A deliberate choice not to recruit equitably in-state is unconscionable, and if that’s correlated to a history of racial exclusion it’s much less than an excuse—it’s a compounding crime. OTOH, deciding how to balance resident and non-resident net tuition has fewer obvious, one-size-fits-all solutions, especially if those extra non-resident dollars are invested in forms that help the state residents or coffers. ‘Bama would have a moral access claim over UVA if (for example) it were meeting full need for its lowest-income students and UVA was instead using its in-state preference to subsidize a larger number of relatively affluent in-state residents.
CafCoLab Co-Director Julie J. Park's op-ed on the higher ed/college admissions dynamics behind #BamaRush https://lnkd.in/ei59YQEm Land grants like UA were funded by the sale of federal lands (stolen from Native Americans) gifted to the states, and were/are subsidized by taxpayer dollars. In-state access should be prioritized over heavily recruiting out-of-state students from wealthy high schools.
