In this article, I discuss the complex, contradicting relations between alpine skiing & the multiple crises in the Anthropocene. So, no matter if you're a passionate skier or despise the skiing industry - I promise it's worth a read.
Three things that made this study so adventurous:
🎿 First, I work with diffractive multimodal vignettes. I followed slight hints & shared stories through various data sources (ethnographic fieldwork, media articles, personal photos) and, using AI, created some uncanny vignettes.
🎿 Second, this study features autoethnographic work: childhood memories and photos, personal reflections and thoughts on skiing, and poetry. Crafting the vignettes felt exciting, but publishing these personal diffractions and inviting possible critique also feels a bit scary.
🎿 Third, I shared many intimate conversations on the troubles of skiing, golfing & other leisure practices along the way at many conferences (such as #GWO2023). So, I'm excited that this paper found a home in the forthcoming SI "Leisure & the Anthropocene," edited by Outi Rantala, Bryan Grimwood & Emily Höckert in Leisure Sciences.
