Transforming Education- Managing Study Stress, Fostering Creativity & the Role of Teachers My #TEDxTalk on Transforming Education https://lnkd.in/g5HzwFge I distinctly remember the day. June-July 2009. Just a few days before I had discussed #education sector & #educationreforms in #india as part of my #essays classes for #ias exam prep. That morning there was news around govt considering scraping Xth #boards exams. Also, the govt was making boards exams optional. (I remember wondering why would any student or his/her parents in their sane minds opt for exams if there was a choice not to appear for one. It beat me) Education related topics are popular with #upsc essays paper. ( scraping of Xth boards became effective from 2010-11 and UPSC did frame one essays topic on this: Credit-based higher education system – status , opportunities and challenges -2011) So I initiated the discussion in the class. One remark caught my attention. ‘Sir, this will be great. Students now don’t need to work as hard. It’s too strenuous and stressful!’ Bingo! So, exams are stressful and therefore we should not have exams. Some logic this is. I pushed, ‘why are exams stressful?’. I was flooded with replies. ‘Because, 1. Too much study.(Ok. The problem then, is the study process and maybe syllabus. Not the #exam itself). 2. Questions asked are not what,s taught. #teachers don’t complete syllabus either. (Ok. The problem then, is completion of course & practice. Not the exam itself). 3. Even after 95%+ students struggle to get into good #college/#schools and to take up subjects of choice. (Ok. The problem then, is lack of enough institutions of repute for 11th & 12th. Not the exam itself). 4. #students struggle on two fronts. The boards and Engg/medical entrance prep. The syllabus and the exams are very very different and it’s like two different courses. Boards make it strenuous. (Ok. The problem then, is divergence in school syllabus and entrance exams standard. Also the pressure to get into a stream that may not be student’s aptitude. And then parental and societal pressure too. Not the exam itself). In my opinion, scraping of exams entirely is horrendous. We should be #teaching children how to study and prepare for exams. Teach the children how to deal with failures. Teach them to manage stress. Not escaping stress Here is my #talk on #TEDx. ‘#Transforming #Education.’ Edukemy Deb Tripathi Nayan Chakravarty Lloyd Mathias Auxano Capital Uttam Verma Devender Saini Neelam Bhatia Banke Bihari Dimple Nankani Nitinhiranandani hiranandani Brijesh Damodaran Ashish Padiyar Vikesh Dhyani Abhijit Mitra #upsc #upscias #education #edtech #niitiaayog #testprep #ias #neetexam #neet #iitjee #jee #TEDtalks #ted #excellencetalks #joshtalks #DU #ststephanscollege #hinducollege #srcc #lsr #kirorimalcollege #tiss #vssut #nep #neweducationpolicy #educationreforms #students #TEDx #newindia #veersurendrasaiuniversityoftechnology https://lnkd.in/g5HzwFge
