Author: WHEALTHSPAN / Keynote Speaker, Lecturer, Longevity & Communities Innovator/ President, Home Ideations / Past President, National Aging in Place Council / American College of Lifestyle Medicine
Professor Dan Winer, MD, heads up the Winer Lab at the #Buck #Institute for #Research on #Aging and is affiliated with the University of Toronto and the University of Southern California. Dr. Winer’s work on #gastroimmunology (#gastrointestinal and #immune systems) has received numerous awards and is regarded as one of the top #microbiome researchers in the U.S. Dr. Winer’s research has demonstrated the key role the microbiome plays in health and disease, and its role in aging. The body produces fewer critical molecules that support #signaling, leading to accumulated dysfunction with age. Winer discovered a way to help preserve the levels of these molecules in the GI tract and positively impact immune function. Winer has invented a proprietary natural ingredient blend that targets the gut microbiome. A preliminary human trial in Europe demonstrated significant promise. Together with Nicholas Tubach, the mastermind behind building the team, the two co-founded a company, “How to Slow Time, Inc.” to bring the blend to market. They recruited an all-star team of international experts, including Jan Scisinski, Maryann Walsh, Amine Zorgani, Bill Andrews, Marco Quarta, Zachary Pogue, and Scott Fulton. The team is actively raising funds for a clinical human trial in the U.S. in 2024 and preparing to bring the Propion product to market in 2025. They recently launched a crowdfunding opportunity for early investors using SAFEs (Simple Agreement for Future Equity), a method developed in 2013 and used by top Silicon Valley startups, raising money from accredited angel investors. Launched just days ago, it is already well on its way to reaching the $50,000 goal to fund the human clinical trial. SAFEs make it easy for consumers to become #angel #investors with opportunities to make significant returns on a modest investment by getting involved early. A proud Pitt moment for sure! Congrats to University of Pittsburgh alumni Michael Leasure, Utkars Jain, and Adam Butchy (pictured left to right), Co-Founders of HEARTio, for being named Forbes' "30 Under 30 Healthcare" 2024! 🎉 HEARTio is developing an algorithm called ECGio to help doctors detect coronary artery disease faster. It is not yet FDA-cleared, but a validation study found the algorithm is able to take a highly accurate reading from an electrocardiogram and provide information about severe problems in seconds. The startup has raised $1 million from angel investors. ❤️ View the full "30 Under 30 Healthcare" 2024 list: https://hubs.li/Q02bcDS00

Check out what our friends at the Reeve Foundation are doing...from Maggie Goldberg, Reeve President and CEO: The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation is thrilled to announce the launch of SCI Ventures, the world’s first philanthropic venture fund dedicated to catalyzing the funding and commercialization of innovative treatments for spinal cord injury (SCI). This groundbreaking global initiative — kicking off with $27 million and an anticipated $40 million by year’s end — is a direct response to the momentum currently transforming the field of spinal cord injury research. After decades of incremental gains, long awaited therapies are finally within reach. The notion that paralysis is treatable — that blood pressure and cardiovascular function might be regulated by epidural stimulation, that new pathways can bridge scar tissue — is no longer simply a dream of determined families. But moving these life-changing treatments beyond the lab demands a new kind of collaboration. SCI Ventures was co-founded in a unique partnership between the Reeve Foundation and leading spinal cord injury organizations including Wings for Life, the International Spinal Research Trust (“Spinal Research”), the Promobilia Foundation and Shepherd Center. Its mission is to bridge the gap from bench to bedside, supercharging innovative lab breakthroughs, boosting early-stage companies, and building financial incentives to bring treatments to market. We are thrilled for Rutgers research team Nervana Therapeutics to be part of the inaugural Venturium Virtual Showcase, where they will present the technology they developed at Rutgers to an audience of venture capital investors, venture studios, accelerators, incubators, industry partners, and entrepreneurs. Nervana Therapeutics' technology is a cellularized nerve regeneration graft (CNRG) that will speed patient recovery from peripheral nerve injury, improve recovery of sensation and motor function, reduce the need for extra surgeries, and decrease lifetime medical and socioeconomic costs of new and poorly-recovered injuries. Venturium 2024, co-sponsored by Rutgers Research, is a curated showcase highlighting spinouts and technologies from members of the Tech Transfer Venture Consortium (TTVC), including Rutgers and fellow co-sponsors Kentucky Commercialization Ventures, Innovate Carolina, Northeastern University Center for Research Innovation (CRI), and PCI Ventures. This event embodies a movement towards collaborative growth, technological advancement, and revolutionizing access to academic venture opportunities. #RutgersInnovation #RutgersResearch #venturium24 #techtransfer #techinnovation #techventures #ventureforward #cofounderconnection #collaborativegrowth

This video is just a peek into the extraordinary hard work that has been put in over the past few months from everyone involved - especially by the 11 companies who completed the Founders at the University of Cambridge Start 1.0 Accelerator Programme. We're so proud of this initiative, and we can't wait to see where it takes our founders, and us, next. #Innovation #Founders #UniversityOfCambridge #Investors #DemoDay
Here's a little glimpse into last week's incredible Investor Demo Day and the journey that we've been on with our first Start 1.0 Accelerator Programme 👀 For the past 12 weeks, the 11 University of Cambridge companies worked extremely hard to refine their propositions, work with EIRs and develop their technology into what we believe will be globally impactful businesses. As our MD Gerard Grech said "They simply aced it in every way". Covering life sciences, climate tech, biotech & materials science, the demo day was an opportunity for them to introduce their businesses to hundreds of top investors. This truly is just the beginning. We invite you to follow each and every one of them - you're going to want to see where they journey to next, and be with them all the way: AetoSense, BioTryp Therapeutics, BravelyCultured, Cambridge Vision Technology, Molyon, Nanomation, Orbit, Protonera, VOLTQUANT, William Oak Diagnostics, and Xterna. For a deeper dive into each company in the Start Accelerator 1.0 Cohort, please visit our website here: https://bit.ly/4a3gbUw Thank you again to everyone who helped make Thursday's event happen. Did you know: Duke's Office for Translation & Commercialization has a new translational fund? FY23 was the inaugural year for the Gilhuly Accelerator Fund, which with Duke Trustee Ned Gilhuly's help supports Duke inventors by accelerating the development of early-stage technologies with high commercial potential. Over $1 million has already been allocated to 14 ongoing projects from across the School of Medicine, the Pratt School of Engineering, and the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. These teams have also gone on to receive significant follow-on funding: over $3 million, a great indicator that these projects, though early-stage, are high potential.
