I had the opportunity to be involved in the co-design of the Tennis Australia Learn 2 Lead program back in March and, since then, the privilege of presenting to each group of participants across the country as a guest speaker during workshops. 🎤
Some things I’ve learnt along the way, that I spoke about included:
➡️📚1. Study your own user manual - spend some time learning about yourself; your values, strengths, likes/dislikes, how you learn best, your personality type, how you best can work to lead at this stage (I.e is it working with large groups of people, or do you prefer 1 on 1?). This self awareness takes time and is rare for young people to have a solid grasp on. Your unique character is something to be built upon, not hidden.
➡️ 👥 2. Identify your circle of influence now and begin to lead - we all influence people everyday, our friends, family, coworkers etc. Our actions and words have ripple effects. Set an example, give some extra encouragement, leave things a little bit better than how you find them etc. Leadership, particularly for people starting out, doesn’t have to mean big gestures. Also, surround yourself with people that inspire you to be your best self. A saying goes that we are the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with. Also seek out values in people you meet that you wish to emulate - find role models.
➡️🙌 3. Say yes to opportunities - particularly opportunities that: excite you, help you to step outside your comfort zone a little bit, expand your circle of influence and vary from your typical activities. The more we try, the easier it is to narrow in on your purpose as you grow.
➡️🏗️ 4. Build your reputation - now is the time to start to be noticed how you wish to be. Never discount any experiences, as everything you have experienced have shaped your values and strengths today. Particularly for interviews or applications, it doesn’t matter how irrelevant an experience may seem, you need to just show how the experience shaped a strength/value/passion, how that will help you be successful in a role and how it aligns with the mission of the company/scholarship etc you are applying for.
So glad to hear of the success of this program and very happy to see the growing confidence of young people to step into more roles in tennis! 🎾
Empowering our next gen leaders 🙌
