𝐔𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐤? [Weekly Halachah #31] May one wash meat and milk dishes at the same time in the same dishwasher? Rav Ovadia Yosef [1] holds that fundamentally, one may wash meat and milk dishes together in the same dishwasher. For two reasons: 1) The meat and milk taste absorbed in the dishwashers walls will only ever be na”t bar na”t. 2) The soap in the dishwasher makes the flavors pagm. However, it is best to wash the meat and milk dishes separately. Rav Moshe Feinstein [2] holds that one may wash meat and milk dishes one after another, so long as one has separate dish racks for the milk and meat dishes, and switches the racks between washing cycles. It is allowed to use the same dishwasher, because the dishwasher itself will only ever absorb na”t bar na”t taste from the food. However, the racks may have meat or milk residue on them which will become absorbed into the plates. Badei Hashulchan, [3] along with many other poskim, rules that one should not use the same dishwasher for meat and milk keilim, even if one has different racks for the meat and milk keilim. Badei Hashulchan notes Rav Moshe’s lenient position, but does not accept it. That said, a broad consensus of contemporary poskim rules that one should use a dishwasher only for one type. This is a #food post. I'm an avid cook and baker. -- "avid" not "good", so what I make is for the less-discerning tastebuds :) Like being on an #exercise routine, I derive therapy and me-time when I am taken in by the process of preparing #food. I reflect and connect the dots when I'm in the midst of "doing". Looking back, I could have both "leapfrogged" and "lagged": ► I'm not a foodie though I learnt to cook and bake. Most people I know enjoy their food as much as their #kitchen pizazz. ► I'm known to eat-to-live (I see you shrug!), so I didn't learn to make food to satisfy my hunger. I derive much pleasure in experimenting and from those who gamely become part of my experiments. ► I've never operated a microwave oven, deemed the most basic kitchen appliance. I'm deft with the oven, air-fryer, and other food #tech though. I couldn't shake off the negative health connotations with the microwave oven, so have never used it, and still don't know how to! ► I wish I could say I have honed my food prep skills with Thermomix which has proven to be the space-saver and likened the kitchen's swiss-army-knives. But I'm not onto that yet and may not too. Tech involves, and food tech is no different. There will always be newer toys, and sometimes the older, basic wares remain the most versatile, just like the microwave oven! My kitchen #experience may lend some help in #careergrowth at #work or #personaldevelopment: ➊ Be resourceful and improvise. The kitchen also has its fair share of near-misses and mishaps, but you are committed to an outcome which everyone is waiting for. Throwing out is a waste, restarting may not be an option, so tweak the menu and still convince everyone the outcome is worth the wait. ➋ Begin with the end in mind. Set out your kitchen tasks by thinking how the turnaround in serving and replenishing can be best optimised. Residential kitchens have limited spaces, so even washing up while cooking may help to make the cleaning up more palatable at the end of the process. With some #planning, you could be preparing the next meal/bake in advance, saving yourself some time in the #process. Below is a simple recipe for a quick meal. Thank God for many more on the Internet, from many avid AND GREAT cooks/bakers who are generous enough to share! Enjoy! #motivation #inspiration

The way we feel has changed, too This speaks about our sensory impressions. The way we use our hands in our daily lives has changed. Our fingers have less to grab due to the digitalisation. Thus the soft-touching and swiping — particularly on household appliances — takes away many activities that used to require a little bit of push, pull and force. Today, there is hardly any electronic device that does not react to even the softest touch, and responds with a “bleep”. No wonder knife sharpeners, espresso machines with real buttons, heavy cast iron pots and pans or a wok burner are more relevant than ever. They connect us to what we humans have always been doing: working with our hands. Baking bread, and beforehand kneading the dough has returned to even the most stressed business person, and as much as it is satisfying to eat one’s own bread, it is also the way to get there by the tranquil notion of kneading and banging the dough. This is what we were mostly after when curating our new book for the Makers Bible series: The sensory add ons, the feel of consistency and temperature, weighing a product with our hands and determining soft- or firmness. Makers Bible Crafting Cuisine is a book that lists the finest food & kitchen brands and their makers we could find. This book provides inspiration for those who like to cook properly and even like to develop their cooking and serving by extending their views. Do you recall household or cooking tasks from your past that have vanished? What did grandma work with, at home? Did you buy products on purpose for their mechanical functions? Do you prefer old-school over modern? Let us know in the comments below. #craftsmanship #cooking #food #household #appliances #bookdesign #makersbible #values #handmade #workhard
