Multi-unit franchising and service franchises have been my whole career. Thanks Franchising.com for the opportunity to share some thoughts. Curious what the PE/VC side would say to questions around service brands. Are they interesting? What types of investments have you made in them?

Franchise businesses operate in various industries, including food and beverage, retail, healthcare, and services. They offer individuals the opportunity to run their own business under the umbrella of a well-known brand. This arrangement allows franchisees to benefit from the parent company's marketing strategies, training programs, and ongoing support, reducing the risks associated with starting a new venture from scratch.
National Franchise Day: Celebrating the Power of Franchise and Marketing
Franchising has become a popular business model that allows entrepreneurs to own and operate a business under an established brand. This unique opportunity not only provides individuals with a proven system for success but also offers a range of benefits, including marketing support. As we celebrate National Franchise Day, let us delve into the significance of franchising and the crucial role marketing plays in its success.

With a franchisor's proven business model, entrepreneurs can avoid the pitfalls often faced by startups and hit the ground running. This support includes comprehensive training, ongoing guidance, and access to a network of fellow franchisees. However, one aspect that often sets successful franchises apart is their ability to effectively market their products or services.
Marketing plays a vital role in the success of any business, and franchises are no exception. Franchisees receive significant marketing support from their franchisor, which enables them to leverage the brand's reputation and reach a broader audience. From strategic advertising campaigns to professional branding materials, franchisors provide the necessary tools to attract and retain customers. This support not only helps franchisees establish their presence in the market but also ensures a consistent brand experience across all locations.

It celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit and recognizes the significant contributions franchises make to the economy. From creating jobs to fostering innovation, franchises play a crucial role in driving economic growth and stability.

Our business clients achieve three important outcomes - A scalable business – Usable operating procedures – Consistent service to clients – Resulting in increased business growth, asset value and time
A lesson on how to scale
Franchised or not, we at Systems2Grow know that this is the right way to do it. Thank you Poolwerx for giving us such a clear example of how business systems like this work so well.
Sarah Stowe’s article in this month’s Inside Franchise Business Magazine (July 3, 2023) really resonated with me. It is about how Malcolm Price, a Poolwerx franchisee, succeeded and grew his multiunit outlets in very tricky times.
At Franchise Simply and Systems2Grow, Poolwerx is one of the franchise groups we use as an example of excellence and from whom we have learned so much.
The Poolwerx system has a very sophisticated example of the three things that give business the framework for success and growth.
· The clear business structure, focused on customer needs, and which allows for a range of outlet types to service the market.
· The amazing systems, people driven and automated, with clearly documented procedures that train and support franchisees and their staff to service their clients and do business and grow – as John O’Brien, the Poolwerx founder always says, ‘we provide a career path’.
· The support staff who understand and support systems which embody what it takes to bring franchise partners and their staff into the family and help them take a business journey from the beginning to growth. Consistency when it matters and flexibility to depart from systems when that is the better option.
I really agree with Malcolm’s sentiments here…
‘The support structure at head office is deep and all the tools are there to succeed. Poolwerx’s thinking around scale businesses has evolved with our growth, and so has its support.’
‘Initially, our needs were centred around technical knowledge and marketing support. Today, it is about strategic positioning, critical business thinking and leveraging technology.’
‘Above all it is partnering together to test the innovation boundaries of our industry and importantly being aligned to the needs of our customers.’

Many people dream of owning their own business, but few have the courage, skills, or resources to do so. For those who want to be their own boss, but also enjoy the benefits of a proven business model, franchising is an attractive option. However, franchising is not a guarantee of success, and it comes with its own challenges and risks.
One of the biggest challenges that franchisees face is how to scale their business and grow their market share. Scaling a franchise business is not as simple as opening more locations or hiring more staff. It requires careful planning, strategic decision-making, and constant adaptation to changing customer needs and competitive pressures.
In this article, we will explore some of the key strategies to scale your franchise business in 2023/2024. We will discuss how to standardize your brand, embrace technology, streamline your operations, communicate effectively, prioritize customer service, and leverage your network. By following these steps, you can take your franchise business to the next level and achieve sustainable growth.

Frantober Fest 2023 Reflections
I had the privilege of attending FranNet’s 2023 Frantober Fest in Cincinnati, Ohio. Beyond the enlightening discussions on franchising with industry experts, it was a fantastic platform to nurture relationships and, yes, indulge in a bit of fun. Such events provide a spirited launch into Q4!
In a rapidly shifting landscape where AI's influence looms large, and global events have continuously reshaped our approaches, the franchising industry stands tall, reflecting its inherent resilience. Here are some key takeaways I'd love to share:
🔍 Adaptive Growth: In the face of pandemic-induced challenges, the franchise world has displayed remarkable adaptability. The panorama of growth varies, but the prevailing sentiment is one of optimism and resurgence.
🌿 Health & Wellness Ascends: A surge is evident in the health and wellness domain. More franchises are tapping into the fitness arena, promoting healthy diets, and advocating holistic wellness. This reflects our collective yearning for a healthier, more balanced lifestyle.
📘 Empowerment Through Training: Franchisors are significantly amplifying their training efforts, ensuring their franchisees are not just well-informed but are truly empowered to thrive.
🌐 Semi-Passive Opportunities: A noteworthy trend is the rise in semi-passive franchising opportunities, signaling a shift in franchisor offerings.
As November unfolds, stay tuned! I'll be spotlighting some lesser-known yet highly promising franchise opportunities that might just pique your interest.
Let me know in the comments what you would like for me to share over the next month!

Part 1 - The 30 Benefits of getting a Franchise business.
I was asked by my neighbour about Franchising yesterday. He asked me if they were a good proposition. I gave him thirty (30) reasons why, and I thought I would share this week’s posts on the basics of Franchising with you and why they are a great proposition.
Joining a franchise system can offer numerous advantages, especially for entrepreneurs who want to start a business with a higher chance of success. Here are 15 of the 30 listed. See my slide for the others.
1. Established Brand: Franchises come with an already established brand name and reputation, which can attract customers more easily than a new, unknown business.
2. Marketing Support: Franchisors often manage national and regional marketing efforts, providing professional advertising and promotional materials.
3. Comprehensive Training: Franchisors typically offer extensive initial training and ongoing support, ensuring franchisees are well-prepared to operate their business.
4. Operational Support: Continuous support in various areas such as operations, management, and administration help franchisees run their businesses effectively.
5. Streamlined Processes: Franchises have established procedures and processes that help streamline operations and improve efficiency.
6. Vendor Relationships: Established relationships with suppliers can ensure consistent quality and favourable terms.
7. Easier Access to Capital: Franchises often have better access to financing options, as lenders may view them as less risky due to their established business model and brand.
8. Franchisor Assistance: Some franchisors offer financial assistance or have relationships with lenders to help franchisees secure funding.
9. Real Estate Support: Many franchisors assist with site selection, lease negotiations, and the design and layout of the business location.
10. Market Research: Franchisors often conduct market research to identify optimal locations for new franchises.
11. Research and Development: Franchisors invest in R&D to keep the business model and products/services competitive, providing franchisees with updated offerings and practices.
12. Network of Peers and a Community of support: Being part of a franchise network allows franchisees to connect with other franchisees, share experiences, and gain insights.
13. Best Practices Sharing: Franchisees can learn from each other’s successes and challenges, fostering a collaborative environment.
14. Legal Resources: Access to legal expertise can help franchisees address any legal issues that may arise.
15. Established Processes: With a franchise, many of the start-up steps are predefined, allowing for a faster and smoother opening.

Multi-unit franchising has been a hot topic in recent years and earlier this summer, Brian Woods, CFE shared a LinkedIn article and Neighborly blog on the topic. But what does multi-unit franchising actually mean? Multi-unit and multi-brand franchising is when a franchise owner aims to maximize as many businesses in a given territory, which allows them to grow exponentially fast.
By investing in multi-unit franchising, owners are able to quickly gain a deep understanding of owning and operating businesses. Of course, it could be daunting managing multiple businesses, but with many multi-unit franchise owners in Neighborly®’s network, our team is committed to helping those through their business ownership journey.

The franchise is a successful business concept developed by the franchisor who grows a multi-unit network through selling the rights to their intellectual property and the systems and processes to operate one or more individual units to franchisees.
Franchising has become an important growth strategy but there are few guidelines for managing franchise systems ‘strategically”.
