I won the 2024 MBA Distinguished Educator Award for junior faculty! I pour my passion, excitement and obsession into my classroom. The most important audience of all, my students, they see me & value me. Thank you MBA Class of ‘24. (1 years: Did we have a good time or what?) I graduated in 2006 and went into management consulting (4 years). 👍cool travel, smart people 👎too much travel and transience Not quite right. So, I wrote a business plan and started a natural food company (2 years). 👍brand building 👎thinking about every function Not quite right. So, went to get my MBA and became a brand marketer (7 years). 👍cool, creative work, brilliant people 👎corporate made me feel stifled Not quite right. AGAIN. I thought something was wrong with me.  That I couldn’t find happiness at work.  That happy & work don’t go together. BUT 4th time is a charm. 3 years ago, I joined Emory University - Goizueta Business School as marketing faculty. I found my Ikigai. The intersection of: What you love What you are good at (See award!!!)  What you can be paid for I got here because I gave myself permission to keep trying careers (with support from Chris Cooley). If this is something you have, CONGRATS.  If this is something you want, GET IT.

This is a terrific video from Eddie Asbie, Executive Director of Admissions for the Two-Year MBA at Cornell Johnson Graduate School of Management. It conveys the importance of being authentic in the application process and this line, in particular, caught my attention: "We want you to acknowledge any weaknesses to improve yourself both personally and professionally." I think we often think we need to present our 'perfect' selves to gain admission to a top business school like #Cornell #Johnson. It's such a competitive process that it makes sense to feel that way. But the thing is that the MBA is an opportunity for transformational growth and if you don't have anything to work on, one could argue, why do you need the MBA? It's totally fine to acknowledge your weaknesses, in addition to your strengths, and provide a strong argument on *how* the program can help. Think of business school as an "academic" gym and show self-awareness of what you want/need to work on. 😊 The final application deadline for this admissions cycle is April 10.

I am excited to share that I have started my 1-year MBA program at Emory University - Goizueta Business School. Brief Reflection Piece… I recently completed the 1st block of my core summer semester, and it’s truly been a challenging, but amazing and transformative journey thus far. One of the courses I enjoyed taking in my 1st block was Managerial Economics, taught by Professor Shankar R.L. (Ramachandran). The course dealt primarily with pricing in different markets, and challenged my decision-making through case workshops in considering the impact of market scenarios on a business. Professor Shankar’s goal in the case workshops was to push my cohorts and me to think through every possible scenario and challenge our thinking so if we made mistakes or jumped to conclusions prematurely, we did so in a safe space prior to our careers in the real world. It's been only 7 weeks, but I can tell there is something different with how I approach problems, and I know my business acumen will increase exponentially by the time I complete the program. I am very grateful for the opportunities I have had in this country since moving to the States in 2012. And now, to be getting my MBA at a rigorous business school like Emory is a feat I never would have imagined possible. As I wrap up this brief reflection, I’d like to thank Carl Slater and Josae K. Wilson, MBA, MA, PMP, SA, two mentors who have played an integral part in my pursuit and application to business school. Carl was someone I met at Community Impact at Columbia University who has given me great advice along my academic and career journey. Josae, I met when I just made Consultant in New York City. Josae blazed the trail before me in earning his MBA. While working together, it was obvious the depth this gave to how he solved problems for clients and the frameworks he was able to create to suit their business needs. Inspired, I wanted to get that type of training as well. To Carl and Josae, I say thank you. Finally, I want to say thank you to my family, friends, and colleagues who have helped me get to this place in life. I don’t know how I can repay you, but I know one thing for sure, I will pay it forward.

Reminder: Do not treat NYU Stern as a “safety school” when applying to MBA programs. NYU Stern's MBA program is disproportionately competitive, considering its rank. It's admission rate is only 27%. That’s lower than Kellogg and Booth (~30%) which are both in the M7. Obviously, many MBA applicants want to live in New York City. Another factor is the school's exceptional connections to Wall Street. We had incredible results at NYU Stern in the last few years, including 4 admits with FULL-RIDE scholarships. The Growing Appeal of One-Year MBA Programs The one-year full-time MBA has long been the pinnacle of European programs (INSEAD, Oxford, Cambridge, IMD, Warwick, Imperial, IE, and ESADE). Then, other programs caught up, with HEC now offering a 12-month program and IESE and LBS offering 15-month MBAs for those who desire it. European programs set the trend, followed by India with ISB. However, the triumph of the one-year MBA is particularly notable in the United States, as mid-career programs at MIT, Stanford, and USC Marshall are one year long. Even the most reluctant US business schools, such as Kellogg, NYU Stern, Cornell, Duke, and Notre Dame, now offer 12-month programs while maintaining the 21-month format for those who prefer a more traditional schedule.
