Tip of the week: Teach your children to be the calm in the storm. In times of crisis, do your best to remain calm, cool and collected in front of your kids. Your kids learn from your examples, especially in situations that are tense or cause others to display less than stellar behavior. We have all seen the out-of-control parent at a sporting event, the maniac driver with kids in the back seat, the random adult throwing a temper tantrum at restaurant, etc. One of the keys to being a successful parent is doing your best to never be that parent in front of your kids. I will never forget the day we dropped off our SUV at the repair shop. As I was placing the car keys in the drop box, a storm swallowed the sky and a blanket of dark, gloomy clouds emerged. Back in our Saturn wagon, my family was listening to the emergency broadcast channel warning about the possibility of severe tornadoes in our part of Connecticut. The kids were old enough to realize the danger, and felt nervous about being in a car during a tornado. As I climbed into the driver’s seat, I calmly talked to my kids on the drive home, taking it as an opportunity to teach them that a reactionary response is not as beneficial as simply proceeding with caution. Of course, I used more haste than normal, but displayed a calm demeanor which helped my kids recognize that their dad had the danger under control. I wanted them to understand that more accidents are caused by people panicking than the actual storm itself. I love the quote from Ed Mylett: “Ships don’t sink because the water that gets around them, ships sink because of the water that gets in them.” If you never let your children see the water getting inside of you, they will learn to sail their own ship calmly through the storm as they get older. #inpsiration #education #motivation #personaldevelopment #parenting Best shot I could find of Alex, Nikki and I in a car when they were younger.
