Had an amazing visit to Vaughan Company Inc. to visit Stacie Vaughan, and see how things are done on the West Side of Washington. Wagstaff, Inc. is always looking for best practices and partners to find the solution to the #workforce challenge, and the strategies they are following at Vaughan hare time-tested and effective. As I walked through the walls of a100-year old building, and saw the CNCs, welders, and other equipment, it felt just like home...it's how you do things at a family-owned building that has been around for decades. Long-term employees make all the difference. A company who invests in their people knowing that it's about the person - not the product - that makes ALL the difference. That is what #manufacturing is all about. I appreciate forging a relationship with other proactive employers throughout the state and the region as we find ways to drive the workforce initiative. We found in our work with Washington State Department of Commerce this year that when business drives the process, and the supporting efforts of education, government, and supporting agencies get behind a single workforce plan, things work. I am confident that we can find a way across the state for businesses to come together to create this opportunity to make this solution happen to our current workforce challenge. Thanks, again, Stacie!! Thank you Dr. Wade M. Larson for making the trip to my neck of the woods to visit Vaughan Company Inc. to discuss workforce development and how we can partner together to improve access to OTJ training for students! I see a lot of opportunities for success in our future as we focus on developing pathways to manufacturing careers beginning as early as the elementary grade level! #workforcedevelopment

In 2020, the percentage of teens considering attending a four-year college was 71%. By 2022, that number dropped to just 51%. More and more young people are choosing to go straight into the workforce after high school, or to pursue alternative pathways to job-related training -- from two-year degrees, to internships/apprenticeships, to skills-based credentials. Those that choose to pursue a job directly after graduating high school often feel unprepared, and public school educators share this concern with only half saying they do a "very good" or "excellent" job preparing students for the workforce. This number is closer to 40% in high poverty neighborhoods. Even amongst those that attend college, only 26% "strongly agree" that what they learned in the classroom is relevant to their work. This all contributes to a shortage of well-qualified workers across a range of professions - a "skills gap" that has enormous economic implications. I'm very proud to share the work Vector Solutions is doing to help prepare our next generation of workers and leaders to be safe and successful in their careers. In addition to "durable skills" training on leadership competencies like communication, creative problem-solving, empathy, etc., we are providing K-12 schools with access to hundreds of Career and Technical Education courses on technical, trade-specific skills. These are the same trainings trusted by thousands of organizations to up-skill, re-skill, and protect their employees. In addition, our Vector Pathways platform gives schools the ability to connect employers with students interested in pursuing work-based learning opportunities (which are arguably the most impactful "pathways" for supporting career readiness). As a public health professional driven by creating communities where everyone can be and do their best, it's very cool to be part of some of the most important work that can be done to help our schools, students, and society thrive into the future. #cte #education #k12
We're excited to announce the launch of our NEW Career and Technical Education (CTE) training courses! These courses cover workplace health, safety, and career readiness topics to ensure student safety and boost employability. Learn more: https://hubs.ly/Q02t0rks0

**Fireground Calculation** When I joined the fire service in 1992, we were taught the the art of fireground calculations. Rapid maths to solve immediate problems. With many negative comments below in relation to NFCC Direct Entry, with many extolling the virtues of years of ‘hands on’ or ‘operational’ experience, I thought I would do some quick fireground maths 30 years operational watch manager, all served on 4/4 watch system. That’s 182 shifts per year (182 x 30 x 12) if we average a 12 hour shift. That comes to 65520 hours. If we take off 20 days annual leave that gives us (162 x 30 x 12). That’s now 58320 working hours. As operational activity is approximately 10% of all activity these days, let’s call it 15% as an average, as it has reduced over time. So 30 years =162 x 30 x 12= 58320/100 x 15 = 8748 operational hours 20 years = 162 x 20 x 12= 38830/100 x 15 = 5832 operational hours 10 years = 162 x 10 x 12= 19440/100 x 15 = 2916 operational hours We all know that operational experience is valuable, it it’s also very cyclical often with limited value in terms of true development. Friday night car/skip fires anyone? 🤷♂️ ‘The key to achieving true expertise in any skill is simply a matter of practicing, albeit in the correct way, for at least 10 000 hours.’ - Malcolm Gladwell Gladwell’s 10,000 hours theory is not watertight but some says it has merit, I’m not sure. So when we criticise the (perceived) expertise of others, in this case, direct entrant Station Managers, we need to be cognizant of what our own ‘operational experience’ actually means; what is its true value and how do/did we measure it? I did just short of 20 years service, with 4 of those in a non operational role. I guess that makes me a bit of an amateur….. Sadly there is no fireground equation for quickly working out the effects of diverse talent over time National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC)
Participants in NFCC’s Direct Entry scheme have reached a key milestone – completing six weeks of intensive operational training at the Fire Service College. A pass-out ceremony at Fire Service College marked what is the first landmark along a robust and rigorous three-year scheme. Direct entry has been designed to work alongside traditional leadership routes – adding the best and brightest from outside our sector to our huge talent base within. It’s an opportunity for us to attract diversity in thought and skill as we face new and emerging challenges. It’s a chance for us to ensure we reflect the communities we serve. "I am a manufacturer, and one of the things I saw missing from the various workforce training programs available was the manufacturers themselves."
