Severe gale low over Scandinavia - causing wave heights of up to 5-6m in the Baltic Sea! A severe gale low over Northern Poland, Sunday evening, will move NNW while further deepening and will be located over southern Sweden on Monday 7th August. Tuesday 8th, the severe gale low will be deepening further and could become a storm low for a period - with centre near Oslo. The deep low will be causing gusts of storm force and also risk of hurricane force gusts (12 Beaufort) in Skagerrak and Kattegat! The associated waves will most likely rise to 6-7m (significant wave height) in Skagerrak and 5-6m in the Baltic Sea! This means problems for leisure boats and small commercial vessels – this is not summer conditions at all! The image displays our latest wind forecast at 12 CET on Tuesday 8th August. Our clients in the region are fully aware of this as the severe conditions were forecast several days ago. Take care - seafarers in Skagerrak, Kattegat, and the Baltic Sea! #Winds #SevereWeather #Maritime #Safety #SafetyOffshore

Today marks the official end of Atlantic hurricane season. This year was anything but quiet, with 20 named storms forming across the region, seven of which became hurricanes. Throughout, USAID disaster experts were hard at work monitoring threats and coordinating with partners to prepare and coordinate relief efforts. As is all too often the case in our line of work, however, waning risks in one region correspond with growing danger in another. Right now, our teams are gearing up for peak cyclone season in southern Africa, which runs through April. When that comes to an end, we’ll be responding to threats elsewhere. What remains a constant is the dedication of our staff to save lives before disaster strikes. MAP: NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration
