Dr. Jean Ouellet , MD, on Remote Scoliosis Monitoring between x-rays and the current state of Scoliosis treatment in Canada. Dr. Jean Ouellet is currently the President of the Canadian Pediatric Spine Society and we dive into why the Canadian health care system fails patients and families with scoliosis. The reasons are numerous. This is a topic that I'm very interested in because I know the system failed my son on multiple occasions. Ironically, it's this failure that finally got my butt in gear and forced me to start advocating for my son. This obsession in turn lead to interviewing scoliosis experts, posting on YouTube and starting this group. Dr. Jean Ouellet's talks about his new remote scoliosis monitoring phone app and how that evolved from inception to testing to crunching the math and the use of AI. Dr. Jean Ouellet explains how technology like this can positively impact scoliosis treatment, empower parents and patients with more control while reducing the burden on the health care system. We also discussed why most school screening systems don't work and how to improve them. Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a rare heritable connective tissue disorder, has significant knowledge gaps regarding its broader health implications for affected individuals and its economic impact on patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers. The IMPACT survey, spearheaded by Mereo BioPharma in collaboration with the global and European OI community, is a patient survey focused on individuals with OI. This survey is the most extensive patient-reported dataset on the experience of individuals with OI to date, providing novel insights into the humanistic, economic, and clinical burden of OI among individuals with OI and their families. Few (possibly zero) healthcare systems are equipped to see a surge in demand for cognitive assessments and Alzheimer’s treatments. Single point solutions will only exacerbate the problem. So, we must look at the problems and solutions holistically—addressing the problems that exist from patient, to Primary Care Provider (PCP), to Neurologist, to the payer and healthcare system at large.
