For the past two years, I have been teaching English to Ukrainian children, teens, and adults via Zoom. One of my students, Victor, started his lessons with me two years ago. Now, he is 15 years old, recently created a video about Ukraine, and gave me permission to post it. 🇺🇦💛🇺🇦 Victor's English narration demonstrates his significant progress. A teacher from Ukraine has got into the top 10 in the world according to the global award Global Teacher Prize. It is Artur Proidakov, teacher of Ukrainian language and literature from Luhansk region, Ukraine. Luhansk is the region, partially occupied by russia since 2014. russia claimed it”s a totally “russian language” region. But no, that’s a lie. Today, I listened to Keir Starmer's speech on Israel-Gaza. Looking at his speech purely from a communications lens, two grave errors were made: 1. Dehumanising language: Keir Starmer words when talking about the horrors in Israel on October 7th - "Men, women, children, babies murdered". He then shortly follows with the horrors in Gaza saying "Thousands of innocent Palestinians… Dead." The difference in language with 'murdered' Israelis and 'dead' Palestinians is bias. Using 'dead' for Palestinians is passive. It ignores the scale of destruction they are facing with the number of innocent civilians killed in Gaza now at 8,500. Using a passive word creates ambiguity on who performed the killing and ignores the cause. 2. Erasing an entire community: Keir Starmer did not mention the existence of the Palestinian Christian community in Gaza - "Israeli. Palestinian. Muslim. Jew." and "not just to kill Jews, it was to bring death upon their fellow Muslims in Gaza.". Whilst a minority in Gaza, the Palestinian Christians are one of the oldest communities and shouldn't have been erased. This is deeply troubling and insensitive when many Palestinian Christians are suffering and killed. This is a reminder why language matters. Words have consequences, they can erase, dehumanise and divide communities. We need to address our 'blind-spots' and biases. #Gaza #Language #Copywriting #GraphicDesign #RacialEquity

In my first year in college I had serious stage fright, I could barely hold a paper without my hands trembling. I avoided anything public speaking, including asking or answering questions. I knew I had to consciously confront this situation but I was clueless. So I decided to observe people who could. Here are Practical Tips I employed in becoming more confident - I started believing in myself more. - I spoke words of Positive affirmation eg Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. - I studied more on the subject matter - I practiced in front of the mirror Today I see myself handling the mic without shaky hands.
