🌍 Each month, over a hundred publications appear in American Forbes. The competition for reader attention is high—especially for non-profit projects. However, there are ways for Ukrainian charitable initiatives to get published in the world's top magazines at no cost. Oleksandra Paniak, Head of Media Relations, shares some tips: 🖋️ Project Uniqueness. Forbes looks for unique stories that can be experienced live and involve the audience in the process. 🖋️ Understanding the Mechanics of Ukrainian and International Media. You need to know the difference between paid and free publications, identify the right media and journalists, and establish contacts with them. 🖋️ Quality Pitch. This requires understanding the target audience, the journalists' areas of interest, and the ideal timing for communication. 🖋️ Rules of Engagement with Journalists. Offer exclusive material to only one person, be prepared that writing an article might take several months, and always be ready to respond to media inquiries 24/7. Kristi Eaton in the US and I are planning on holding a webinar in the next month on how to land and increase media coverage. We're trying to please get an indication of how much interest there would be in this. The price will be affordable. This would be good for charities and NGOs, small businesses, entrepreneurs, PR agencies and others, but really any one wanting to increase their visibility and coverage. Between us, we've got four decades' experience as journalists - reporting from both fast-paced newsrooms including most of the UK national papers and major magazines and as foreign correspondents from six continents. We've racked up bylines with The Guardian, Sydney Morning Herald, NYT, LA Times, The Washington Post, CBC, National Geographic, Marie Claire, Devex, newswires AAP, AFP, AP, and TRF, and many more. As communications and media consultants, we've worked for The Hunger Project, Transparency International, CIVICUS, Mercy Corps, Rutgers, VSO and more. This includes ghostwriting pieces for and placing them with the FT, Al Jazeera, Telegraph, Radio France International (RFI), NPR, and TechCrunch, among many. Besides having as much practical advice as possible, there will also be a handout. Please like or comment if you'd be interested or share and feel free to leave any thoughts or DM me. Thankyou in advance. 🙏 #webinar #PR #publicrelations #mediarelations #communications #coaching #mediatraining #byjournalists #charities #smallbusiness #socialenterprise #entrepreneurs #agencies #journalism #PRagencies #nonprofits

Thanks to the global media environment, we currently have access to knowledge about almost any issue worldwide at our fingertips. The journalistic media provide news, stories, expert analyses, and explainers, and Wikipedia offers a user-friendly introduction to nearly any topic. All of this, supported by citizen journalism via social media, and we can directly witness global events. However, despite this scope, there is a lack of media outlets that bring all the information together so that anyone anywhere can easily develop a comprehensive understanding of the situation around the world. We believe that if everyone had access to a precise picture of the broad socio-political situation today, it could help make the world a more humane place. Therefore, we are developing a new map-based encyclopedia from which anyone can reflect upon the broad social and political situation in today's world from a bird's-eye perspective, with systematic and in-depth content created by specialists invited from around the globe. This community-funded, nonprofit initiative aims to bridge the knowledge gap. Join our membership community and help us build this new encyclopedia. There were really many failures and struggles, and this journey will most likely be uneasy also in the future. But I genuinely believe it is worth it: I wish we could bring a message about the reality people live in, all over the world. I will probably always remember watching these events. Whether it was the Ukrainian Maidan and later events in Crimea or Donbas, when refugees from the Middle East were crossing the Balkan or later got blocked on the Belarus-Polish borders, the capturing of Aleppo, the fall of Kabul, suppressed protests in Belarus or Russia, the full-scale invasion of Ukraine or the current retaliatory operation in Gaza. They always caught me somewhat personally, although I was in most cases quite far from them, sitting in the cosy and safe Central Europe. But I think I always had this feeling: even though we could watch it all live, be “almost” there and see it at first hand, as well as learn about various details, listen to stories of these people or receive analyses and explanations of the events from various experts, these were always only fragments of the reality. Specific pieces of the whole mosaic - reality, in which these people had to live, struggle with or try to escape. And thus we could not fully understand their lives and share the perspectives from which they see the world. Of course, one can never really gain such understanding until we share the same bodies, live in the same situations, or at least hold the same passports. But I believe, that if there was a chance to see the whole story of the countries, the broad picture including various invisible daily life conditions, which other people, living in other countries, can hardly even envision, and a chance to see how life in a single country is connected with the rest of the world, we could better understand these people, more closely experience their lives and reflect ourselves. At least before we make unfair judgements, fabricate various narratives, simply ignore, refuse our own responsibility, select our heroes and enemies, or make political decisions. Moreover, I believe, it could contribute to creating more space for mutual empathy and solidarity, across the globe. This is why we are developing this encyclopedia. As a dream of a digital place, from which one could receive such a complete message about the reality in individual countries, as well as about the global reality of our connected world. We are still only at the beginning. And can hardly fulfil such a mission alone, with a small nonprofit encyclopedia (and seeking sustainable funding has been somewhat super uneasy for us). But I believe, that if more people, organisations, universities and media join this collaborative initiative, it might happen. Once, in the future, but it seems not impossible! And so, here I am inviting you: join our membership community and help us deliver this message! 🙂The link is in the comments too.

In the first 9 months of 2023, the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) granted almost $72,000 in Emergency Fund requests to 39 journalists who had reported direct threats or were physically attacked. This crucial funding, made possible by generous donor support, helps to protect the safety of women journalists facing urgent risk of harm to their physical and mental welfare. In fact, one-third of 600 women journalists surveyed by the IWMF said they had considered leaving the profession because of online threats they experienced. That is 200 voices potentially lost in global media, voices of brave women journos who stand in the face of fear to bring truth to light. As a supporter and follower of the IWMF, you share our belief that we must protect these journalists as they put themselves in harm's way to report the truth. Help us ensure the safety of women journalists worldwide with a contribution to our Emergency Fund today. Your gift will directly impact a journalist in need. Any amount is greatly appreciated and remember, many smaller gifts combined can make a huge impact. - 5 gifts of $25 can provide a journalist covering conflict with life-saving protective gear - 15 gifts of $50 can help relocate a journalist who fears for her life On this Giving Tuesday, use your power of giving to stand with these fierce women journalists and ensure they are safe to remain as powerful voices in global media. According to the 2024 Trends Report (by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism & Nic Newman) "Subscriptions/memberships" are the most important revenue stream for digital publishers. This may not reflect Central European realities yet, but things are heading in this direction. The report also shows the increasing importance of philanthropic funds (grants), here CE is probably ahead of the global curve. You can read more about these topics and browse through 9 million euros worth of active grant calls for CE publishers here ---> https://lnkd.in/dwztaPad

As we approach the EOFY, we are asking individuals, businesses and trusts to please consider donating to Dart Centre Asia Pacific. Each donation will assist us in supporting journalists and media workers across the Asia Pacific region through the provision of psychosocial education and training and wellbeing support. Why does this matter? Because good journalism matters to the community. It's not just so we have something entertaining to scroll through on our social media feeds or read with our morning bowl of cereal. Our democracy relies on it. It exposes wrongdoing and injustice, it scrutinises people in power, and it bears witness to both devastation and celebration. Now, more than ever, we need properly sourced, robustly researched journalism. But online violence towards journalists is a growing threat to good journalism, and journalist wellbeing is being impacted by constant exposure to traumatic stories, especially war, conflict, and disaster. During this time of cumulative, unrelenting trauma, please help us support those who keep us informed. Please use the QR code below or the following link to donate today: https://lnkd.in/gcW2V5RC

Head of National Programs at the Lenfest Institute for Journalism. Non-profit founder and product exec. The calm on your team.
Notes from Evan Smith's #TribFest2023 interview with John Palfrey about the #PressForward initiative: 🗳️ Democracy is in crisis in part due to the underfunding of local news. With few notable exceptions, running a newspaper is no longer a profitable business — but many assume it still is. 🤝 We need a blended strategy to address this, and philanthropy is part of that. Is it perfect? No. But would you tell philanthropies to stop? ❤️ People and philanthropies should support journalism the way they do hospitals and museums. 🎪 MacArthur's Press Forward initiative aims to attract more funders to the cause through a "big tent" approach. The idea is to enlist funders who have never supported journalism before and create a long-lasting funding network. 🌐 The initiative will support 1) trusted local news sources, 2) infrastructure—a big investment once or twice, 3) diversity and equity: people who don’t believe in DEI aren’t welcome in Press Forward. “We will be accountable to what we’re saying,” and 4) public policy. 💸 Funds will be divided between an aligned fund and a pooled fund, with the majority of funders preferring the aligned fund. This will allow them to support outcomes they care most about. The aligned fund is a way to get more funders to “yes.” 📊 Grants of various sizes will be offered. Grants under $500k will be easier to approve; grants over $500k will still be awarded but require board approval. The board rarely says “no” once something reaches that stage. 🤖 Press Forward will hire outsiders to work with prospective grantees to bring their ideas to the table. The process for deciding who gets funds is not yet strictly defined but will involve two new program officers at MacArthur and two at the Miami Foundation. 🕰️ Press Forward will officially last five years. The hope is that funders from the “big tent” will continue long-term. MacArthur hopes for a mindset shift among potential donors.
