For most brands, optimizing returns is an afterthought. Almost everyday I see a post promoting the best “ecom tech stack” and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a returns management solution included. Typically, the trigger for brands to source a returns software comes from customer service. They’re spending too much time handling return requests, so they look to automate the process. This leads the discovery process to fall short, focusing primarily on clerical processes which means having a self-serve portal that handles returns and exchanges, label generation, refunds, and data capture. Most brands stop here. They think they have a solution for returns. Brands who have turned returns into a competitive advantage go well beyond simply installing an app and calling it good. Operations HAS to lead this project by fully scoping out every aspect of the business returns touches. If you aren’t including ways to lower shipping costs, processing cost, refurbishing/reconditioning, storage and handling, and resale you are missing the largest problem areas for returns.
