I was doing some reading online about coaching and came across an article in Inc. Magazine about how successful CEOs have coaches. (The link is in the first comment.) I love that it summarizes coaching as: 1. Great coaches see what we don't 2. Great coaches say what we can't 3. Great coaches know things we don't 4. Great coaches disrupt our habits and challenge our stale beliefs (OK, I added #4) Demetra Moore who has been mentor, colleague and friend for a while now described coaching as disruption and I love this description. I absolutely love the field of Executive Coaching! People all have problems. We are human. We all struggle. Leadership is not easy. Have you ever asked someone a coaching question and they’ve replied like this? “Ooh, good question!” If you have, you no doubt enjoyed the moment that followed. Silence. Followed by deep reflection and a lightbulb moment. Hopefully you gave yourself a little pat on the back for asking a great question! 👏 👏 👏 If you want to ask more powerful questions, that’ll help your team go deeper and unlock new perspectives, try one of these: 📍 Clarify and build further meaning What’s most important about that to you? 🔍 Uncover assumptions How do you know that’s true? 🧐 Recall past experiences When have you been in this situation before? 💡 Challenge views What else could have contributed to this situation? 🔥 Evaluate consequences What would happen if you said no? ——————— P.s. STOP OVER-ADVISING: KEEP IT SIMPLE Have you even been over-advised? Someone, a superior, a co-worker or an overzealous consultant, bombarded you with advice for improvement. All with the best intentions of course. But how and where to start if you get such an abundance of recommendations? If we want somebody to improve their performance, we tend to overdo it. Again with the best intentions, we over-advise. We mention six or seven areas for improvement, some big, some small, some important, some less important. Instead of one or two. The result: by over-advising we fail to achieve our objectives. It's so much easier to remember one tip instead of seven. And if the odd person even remembers all your seven tips, he/she will start cherry-picking at the most. So if you want your advice to be meaningful, keep it simple: ◉ Stick with one or two important tips. Formulate them beforehand in a positive way. The aim of the conversation is improvement, not to tear somebody down. ◉ Use examples. From your own experience and from others. Emphasize that we're all learning continuously. ◉ Restrict the meeting to 30 minutes. More time means more space for over-advising. If you stop over-advising, you'll become a much better leader. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿: 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀   I coach leaders in transition such as taking on a bigger role.   One of the traits that organisations ask of their leaders is authenticity.   Authenticity is about being true to your values     as well as being consistent with your words and actions.   You say what you do and you do what you say.   And   You stand up for your values despite pressures from others.   I worked with a client up for a huge promotion.   The problem?   The client seemed to say all the right things.   Things that they thought others wanted to hear.   Their stakeholders saw through this and felt that they didn’t know what the client stood for.   In our coaching sessions we explored this challenge.   Their value of “keeping the peace” was the main reason why they came across as a people pleasure. When asked what other values were important to them, “Fairness” was high on their list. “Fairness” for them was about standing up for others. Standing up for others and driving through what they thought were right. Despite fierce objections from senior stakeholders, their passion for what they believed won them over as well as their respect.
