National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims is recognized by our group of companies as a day to take time to remember fellow Canadians who rely on us to make our roads safer. “In Canada, there are approximately 1,900 road fatalities and 150,000 injuries each year.” (Transport Canada). Thankfully, road safety in Canada is improving thanks to improved safety programs and collision prevention devices.   Crash testing is a way to evaluate the crashworthiness of roadside hardware that provides peace of mind to designers, owners and operators that the barriers we build will perform when it’s needed. We are invested in the development of roadside safety barriers and the accelerated adoption of MASH crash-tested barriers. One crash is too many.

Prior to the 1973 Oil Embargo shaking the world, highway policies were the same in the US, Sweden, and Denmark. All favored higher speeds. All had the same safety record. All required the same oil use of 43 megawatt-hours per person per year. Following the Embargo US policies continued with sprawl. Sweden/Denmark shifted to make streets safe for commerce, pedestrians, and bikes cutting per person oil use to 60% below the US and road-kills of bike riders and pedestrians to 400% below the US. 🚨 Dramatic Truck Rescue in the US 🚨 This is the moment a truck driver was rescued from as her lorry dangled over the edge of The Clark Memorial Bridge in Louisville, Kentucky. A recent incident in Kentucky serves as a stark reminder of the importance of not only situational awareness and fatigue management but also rescue and emergency preparedness in any situation. Following a crash on the highway, the lorry was left hanging over the boundary of an overpass, prompting a swift response from emergency services. While fortunately, there were no serious injuries reported, the scene underscores the critical need for readiness in times of crisis. Did you know that fatigue is a leading cause of road accidents in the UK? According to statistics, tiredness contributes to around 20% of accidents on major roads. I know today is a Sunday and many of my industry colleagues won't be on LinkedIn today....but whenever you do see this post please take a few extra moments to think about the importance of transportation safety. We recognize Nov 19 as the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, a sadly all-too-common outcome on our transportation network. I've read statistics that say as many as 95% of us know someone who has been involved in an unnecessary roadway crash, and I'm sure it's a ridiculously high percentage for those who have gone on to lose their lives as a result of those crashes. We can do better. We MUST do better. Through the #SafeSystemApproach we know that roadway safety can be enhanced by addressing the problem from many different angles - the driver, the roadway, the vehicle, the post-crash response, and the understanding that humans can and will make mistakes. Let's take some of that political energy spent on nonsensical issues and push it in the direction of saving lives! In the US alone we lose nearly 40,000 people every year. EVERY YEAR! Let's make 2024 the year we turn the corner on safety, and start making decisions, policies, funding, and most importantly attention to fixing this unnecessarily sad statistic! https://lnkd.in/emwE7dzd

Today marks the start of National Road Safety Week. It's an important date to remind us of the needless tragedies taking place on Australian roads. Every year more than 1200 people are killed on our roads and more than 44,000 seriously injured. That's tens of thousands of families whose lives are changed forever in a split second. The annual initiative, delivered by the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) group aims to highlight the impact of road trauma and how to reduce it. At Shine, we deal with the after-effects of road trauma every day, advocating for justice for our clients and their families whose lives have often been significantly affected. Today we pause to remember the 1200 and implore everyone to take care on our roads. Together we can make driving safer and reduce the tragic toll, so let's Drive So Others Survive.
