Do your people passively consume learning or do they actively experiment and learn through doing? Esther has some tips to help you source high quality training and development that supports real learning and ROI.
A big challenge for leaders, facilitators, HR teams and L&D teams is the need for people to move from passive consumption to active learning in their roles. Why? Passive consumption: โ Boring. โ Short shelf-life and quickly dated. โ Context-specific and not transferable. โ The leader or facilitator has the power. โ Keeps people dependent on you. Active learning: ๐ Engaging and stimulating. ๐ Evolves with time and context. ๐ Gives people the skills to keep learning for themselves afterwards. ๐ The leader or facilitator is a co-host with the participants. ๐ Enables people's autonomy, resilience, and creativity. In my role, I'm often approached by new clients who say they previously worked with a provider to run training but it didn't 'stick' or deliver the results they hoped. Thankfully, some have happier endings! But I'm always interested to find out why the other trainings were unsuccessful. Inevitably, the training involved passive consumption. No one recognised this because there were familiar features that we expect from training, such as: โก๏ธ A set of slides that looked great. โก๏ธ Small group activities. โก๏ธ Regular group discussions. โก๏ธ An action plan at the end of the day. Seems okay, right? Well, no. These things are not enough. As a client commissioning training, here are some features you could look for that indicate active learning: โ A 'how to learn' session giving people some learning tools and skills up front that they can use throughout the training and afterwards. โ Peer/social learning opportunities throughout. โ Case study and scenario work where there are multiple possible solutions. โ Integrated project work linked back to your organisation's objectives. โ The use of role play/real play/theatre techniques for immersive and realistic skills practice. โ Training linked to real-world events and hypothetical futures ('what if' discussions). โ Regular time throughout to capture learning and actions. โ Use of line manager or mentor support in the workplace to transfer actions back to work. โ Ongoing peer support back at work for embedding learning as a community of practice. If your training incorporates at least a few things from this list, it's likely to have a much greater impact and be more sustainable than training that doesn't. #ActiveLearning #LearningAndDevelopment #BestPractice #PeopleDevelopment #ProfessionalDevelopment #HR #LAndD

Every individual has unique learning and development needs. To cultivate a workforce that is dynamic and deeply engaged, it's crucial to wholeheartedly adopt and implement personalized learning. Imagine if your organization knew exactly what everyone was good at, what they like doing, where they required development and how they prefer to learn.... then, they used this information to help people set goals that match what they dream of achieving and learn in a way that's just right for them. It's not impossible!! It doesn't mean that work can't involve some tasks that people don't love but it will mean that individuals will be better able to cope with tasks they find challenging and provide more opportunity to work on those they enjoy more. While giving people such individual attention might sound like a lot of work, it is probably costing you more NOT to do this. It's important for organizations to understand WHY personalized learning matters. So, in case anyone is unsure...here are three really good reasons: 1๏ธโฃ Engagement: When employees see a direct link between their personal development and their daily work, engagement skyrockets. They're not just working; they're growing. 2๏ธโฃ Retention: People stay where they grow. By investing in tailored development paths, we're not just building skills; we're building loyalty. 3๏ธโฃ Innovation: Diverse learning paths lead to diverse thinking. This diversity is the platform for innovation and adaptability in our organizations. Once we accept this much, it's important to understand HOW to shift from generic to personalized learning and development approaches. So, here are my top three tips: ๐ฏ Listen: Start with understanding the individual aspirations and learning preferences of your team members. ๐ฏ Align: Ensure that development opportunities are not just personalized but also aligned with the broader goals of your organization. ๐ฏ Adapt: Embrace a flexible approach to development, utilizing technology, coaching and mentorship to craft learning experiences that evolve with the needs of each team member. The result? A vibrant, engaged workforce that grows with your business #personalizedlearning #learninganddevelopment #learning #employeedevelopment #training #coaching #mentoring #individualizedlearning

It helps identify specific skill gaps and learning styles, allowing for customized training that's more engaging and relevant. This approach ensures the training addresses actual requirements, boosting efficiency and motivation. Focused training, aligned with their needs, accelerates skill acquisition, enhances job performance, and increases team productivity. 2. ๐๐ก๐จ๐จ๐ฌ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐๐ซ ๐ฆ๐๐ญ๐ก๐จ๐๐ฌ Choosing the proper training methods involves understanding your team's learning preferences and goals. Interactive methods like workshops or group activities encourage engagement. E-learning offers flexibility for diverse schedules. Hands-on training is excellent for practical skills, while mentoring can provide personalized guidance. Assess the team's needs to select the most effective method, ensuring relevant and impactful training. 3. ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฏ๐ข๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ค ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ. Providing feedback and support is vital to enhancing learning. Regular, constructive feedback helps team members understand their progress and areas for improvement. Offering support through additional resources, one-on-one sessions, or peer mentoring can further assist in their development. This approach not only improves skill acquisition but also boosts morale and confidence. 4. ๐๐ฏ๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐๐ญ๐ ๐๐ก๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ฌ Evaluating outcomes is crucial for improving training and development, especially when a team struggles to learn new skills. It allows you to identify what's working and what's not. By analyzing outcomes, you can pinpoint specific areas where the team faces difficulties, enabling targeted interventions. This approach fosters a more tailored training program that addresses individual and collective learning gaps. Additionally, outcome evaluation helps set realistic goals and expectations, ensuring training aligns with the team's capabilities and organizational objectives. Regular feedback based on these evaluations keeps the team motivated and on track, ultimately enhancing the overall learning process. #ConstructiveFeedback #TeamSupport #ProfessionalDevelopment #EmployeeGrowth #Mentoring
