On July 4th we celebrate the courage of those men and women who embraced the idea of freedom and indepedence and sacrificed much to earn it. It took over seven years from the time the Declaration of Independence was signed until the day the British surrendered, but those in the halls of Congress, and those who rallied behind such a powerful ideal didn't know how long the task would last. Today we are honored and inspired by those same "self- evident" truths to continue building a more perfect Union, no matter how long the task will take. Indigenous Peoples' Day is celebrated on the second Monday of October and recognizes the resilience and diversity of Indigenous Peoples in the United States. In 1977 participants of the United Nations International Conference on Discrimination against Indigenous Populations in the Americas proposed that Indigenous Peoples’ Day replace Columbus Day. Indigenous Peoples’ Day recognizes that Native people are the first inhabitants of the Americas and urges Americans to rethink history. Celebrating Columbus and other explorers like him dismisses the devastating losses experienced by Indigenous Peoples of the Western Hemisphere in the past and the ongoing effects of colonialism today. European contact resulted in devastating loss of life, disruption of tradition, and enormous loss of lands for Indigenous Peoples in the Americas. They continue to fight to maintain the integrity and viability of Indigenous societies. Indigenous Peoples' history is one of cultural persistence, creative adaptation, renewal, and resilience. “If you like what you are reading, contact us to learn how we can build your organization a customized training. Native American Heritage Day - A Reflection of America's Acknowledgment Native American Heritage Day, established in 2009, serves as a reminder of America's historical mistreatment of Indigenous communities. It stands as a solemn acknowledgment of the deep-seated guilt and responsibility for centuries of injustices perpetrated against Native American tribes. This observance symbolizes the nation's troubled past—marked by dispossession of lands, cultural suppression, and systematic erasure of traditions. It reflects the guilt America carries for the exploitation, marginalization, and discrimination faced by Indigenous communities. While this day signifies recognition and reconciliation, it's not free from the shadow of guilt. Critics argue it may be a token gesture, not addressing the magnitude of past atrocities. Substantive actions are crucial, including addressing land rights, healthcare, education, economic empowerment, and cultural preservation. Native American Heritage Day prompts introspection into systemic inequalities and challenges faced by Native American communities. It should spur genuine dialogue, policy changes, and a commitment to rectify historical wrongs. It stands as a reminder that guilt alone is insufficient—meaningful actions and true reconciliation are essential for healing and a more equitable future.

The White House Proclamation on Indigenous Peoples' Day, 2023: The story of America’s Indigenous peoples is a story of their resilience and survival; of their persistent commitment to their right to self-governance; and of their determination to preserve cultures, identities, and ways of life. Long before European explorers sailed to this continent, Native American and Alaska Native Nations made this land their home, some for thousands of years before the United States was founded. They built many Nations that created powerful, prosperous, and diverse cultures, and they developed knowledge and practices that still benefit us today. But throughout our Nation’s history, Indigenous peoples have faced violence and devastation that has tested their limits. For generations, it was the shameful policy of our Nation to remove Indigenous peoples from their homelands; force them to assimilate; and ban them from speaking their own languages, passing down ancient traditions, and performing sacred ceremonies. Countless lives were lost, precious lands were taken, and their way of life was forever changed. In spite of unimaginable loss and seemingly insurmountable odds, Indigenous peoples have persisted. They survived. And they continue to be an integral part of the fabric of the United States. Read the full Proclamation here: https://lnkd.in/gmK3dfdY

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we acknowledge that we are on the unceded traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh, as well as the ancestral lands of the First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples who have been stewards of this land for countless generations. Acknowledging the historical injustices and ongoing challenges Indigenous communities face, we commit ourselves to ongoing education and awareness about Indigenous history, culture, and rights. We aspire to be better allies and advocates for the Indigenous peoples and commit ourselves to listening and learning from the Indigenous voices that continue to guide us in caring for this land and its communities. In this spirit, we commit to fostering a more inclusive and equitable future where we can all live, work, and learn together in harmony. Heritage is additionally committed to building a sustainable future, acknowledging the necessity of preserving our lands for future generations, and strive to work with local Indigenous communities, ensuring this is done in a meaningful, responsible way.
