Congratulations Dame Dervilla! It is so wonderful that my colleague Dervilla Mitchell's contribution to engineering has been recognised in the King’s birthday honours. Dervilla was our Deputy Chair until she stepped down in April this year. She is a member of the Prime Minister’s Council for Science & Technology (since 2014) and has held many roles in the Royal Academy of Engineering, including receiving the President’s medal. She is a world-famous engineer, specialising in leading aviation projects, and responsible for the delivery of several massive, complex airport terminals, most notably Heathrow T5. This beautiful, functional building was a pioneer in the use of BIM, and in “client + design team + contractor” collaboration – effectively an alliance contract. Dervilla went on to found and lead our design team leadership group, helping to raise the profile and quality of our ability to lead and deliver large multi-disciplinary design projects. She is a lovely person, a role model for professional women, who is always cheerful and optimistic – a delight to work with and to be with. When I joined Arup we had several knights – Sir Ove Arup, Sir Philip Dowson and Sir Jack Zunz. It feels quite appropriate that now we have Dame Jo da Silva DBE and Dame Dervilla Mitchell DBE.
I could not agree more. Very well said. Congratulations Dervilla. I will never forget working with you on a concept for St Petersburg Airport which now seems a long time ago. You have taught me a lot in my early years and - probably without knowing - were a great mentor. Greetings from Melbourne and all the very best.
Tristram Carfrae RDI how wonderful!! please introduce me to this amazing lady! As a fellow Irish woman, I would like to make sure everyone hears about her recognition and congratulates her on these achievements in engineering on the Think.Future podcast. What a great role model!
