How would you construct foundations through that?!! Our paper on Managing piling obstruction risk intelligently for reinvention of a UK brutalist building has now been published, in the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) #forensicengineering journal, foundation re-use special edition. Whilst we did re-use foundations, the main success of this project was the innovative and collaborative approach between Arup KELLER McGee and Platform to manage the considerable underground obstruction risk for the additional piles. The foundation strategy was a key component of the building being able to re-use 80% of the existing fabric, and achieving SCORS rating A+ for structural embodied carbon. And the piling was completed on time, and to budget. The paper contains details of obstruction drilling trials and in production, as well as setting out design considerations and the contractual approach. The Hwy 212 Bayou Derriseaux Structures project involved the replacement of two bridges - a main structure and relief structure - over Bayou Derriseaux on Highway 212 in Cleveland County, Arkansas. The goal was to improve hydraulic capacity, comply with Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) standards and remove load limits. The new integral bridges, measuring 143 feet by 33 feet and 241 feet by 33 feet, feature two 11-foot-wide paved travel lanes with 4-foot-wide shoulders. One of the key advantages of these integral bridges is their durability. By eliminating expansion joints and ensuring structural continuity, they require less maintenance and offer superior performance in terms of structural integrity, seismic resistance, and ride quality. Michael Baker International played a crucial role in this project, providing roadway and bridge design plans, hydraulic and geotechnical studies. The project also involved acquiring additional right of way and temporary construction easements.
